I have a problem with my ducks! During the summer everything was fine as the water was outside and the coop stayed dry. Now that there is two feet of snow in the outside area the water has to be inside and the ducks are making a terrible wet mess of the coop! Any ideas on what I can do to keep the coop dry this winter. I really don't have a good way to separate the ducks from the chickens. I am currently using small flexible pans for the water,as the real chicken waterer kept freezing up.

Thanks for any advice you may have - it will be a long winter if I have to keep cleaning wet shavings out of the coop all the time:)

I would just get a small childs plastic pool and keep it outside with water, if it freezes, the ice will be easy to break, and if you float a chunk of wood in it, it won't freeze as easy or solid across. As far as water pans, use some heavy gauge mesh with openings just big enough for the birds to get their beaks in and drink, not matter what, ducks will make a mess, also if you set the water pans in a larger pan, most of the wet will stay in the larger pan.

Thanks Teresa! We tried the pool, but it froze solid:) Don't think we will get it emptied until May! I have one corner of the coop that just has gravel and no rubber matting so I put the water pans there and at least the water just goes down to the drainage system. they still make a mess but I think we can make it through the winter, but if this doesn't work I will try the mesh on top of the water. I really appreciate the suggestions!
