I'm currently using Layena but I'd like to get thoughts from those using chicken layer feed - what brands are you using, what are you avoiding, etc. My local feed shop only carries the one brand so I'd probably have to get any other type delivered. Thanks!

There are so many differant grain mills across the country, that recomending any "one" would probally be hard. My advice to to find one that is not full of hormones and antibiotics. If you do use layer feed, My advice there is to use crumbles or pellets, not mash, there is too much waste with mash, its also "dusty", and can cause respitory problems by them inhaling the "dust". I mix my scratch and layer crumbles 30/60.

I agree with Teresa. Layer pellets are good. I ask for organic layer pellets at our local feed store. If they don't carry them, ask them to order them for you, so they bear the shipping cost. They can just have them brought in for you with their next shipment from their warehouse. You really shouldn't have to mail order feed - shipping will kill you. Another thing I do, is supplement their feed with free "scratch" I am barter for with a gal that packs kettle corn. The dropped kettle corn, some that is a bit out of date, etc, she packs in bags, and I got about 12 trash bags full trading 2 dozen eggs. Look on craigslist for barter, food, etc. or put a wanted ad there yourself - you'll be shocked at what you can get. Virginia

My pet rooster loves cat food Before the hens all got ate by raccoons, we used a layer feed and a scratch mixed as Teresa said...very good advice...gotta figure out how to beat the little devils before I get more hens...Roo is too big and mean for the predators so far *crossing my fingers* his name is T-Rex he sounds like a little dinosaur

Yea, Read somewhere where a little cat food or corn is good to boost proteine in the winter.
Corn actually raises body temperature, so it's best to keep this to winter months only to avoid birds over heating |
