A friend of mine use to raise chickens but sold them all when she thought they were moving. Well she isn't and sorely misses her chickens but is tight on money ect. I love farm fresh eggs but live in the city and can't have chickens so I thought possibly we could share chickens and the eggs. My friend is all for sharing I think.
Does anyone have an idea on how to do that? I was thinking maybe buying the feed and splitting the eggs. or possible buying half the chickens and half the feed? What do you ladies think?? |

figure what it would cost to pay someone to come and care for the chickens, feed and water them and pick-up the eggs, plus clean the coop as needed, then the cost of the feed. Depending on how many hens you get, are you planning on dayolds or poulets, or full grown, split the buying cost, then raising them till they start laying if they are the younger ones. Then once you figure whos paying what, and then what is fair, on top of what eggs sell for in your area, you then can figure out is it worth all the possible problems.

I am planning to do this with a couple of friends with a milk cow. Since I would be keeping the cow on my land and doing all of the work we arranged that all the others (there are 3 other families) would be responsible for the purchase of all feed and vet bills. they divide the cost between them 3 ways. (We are dividing the original purchase price between the four of us.) Since we grow our own hay I am providing the hay. We are going to split the milk between the four of us. each family is responsible for picking up their milk from my farm. We also have a calf that we will raise until butchering age and then we will divide the meat evenly between us. We have a written contract that we have all signed and had notorized that way no one can back out. I would assume you could do sometihng similar with your friend.

FYI, I kept track of how much it cost me to get 28 one day old chicks up to the first egg.
Counting the cost of the chicks (murry mcmurry), I have $286 invested. Kinda expensive, I think but can't stand the thought of buying store bought eggs.
Julie, wish I could get in on the milk cow deal. No one around here wants to mess with the cow.

| Wow this is more intense than I thought!! Ok I may be rethinking this but love farm eggs. Hmm I raise show rabbits but not meat rabbits. Maybe I should get a few meat rabbits and then I could trade meat for eggs. |

Lorie, we could sure work out a deal on the rabbit/eggs. I live just a quarter mile from OK. Unfortunately, I am about as far from Guyman as you can get in KS.

I will have to look up Coffeeyville, Ks I travel all over for these goofy rabbit shows. Maybe sometime we will be close enough to trade. |

| Well my friend that was going to share chickens with me doesn't want to share. She is a bit on the stingy side here lately and wants to sell the eggs. I was willing to pay for feed and half the chicks ect but then she started talking about the cost of building a new cage, daily care ect so it would be cheaper for me just to buy eggs from her (which is what I think she wanted anyway). |

Lorie, you may be better off, business deals regarding friends and livestock, usually turn into a version of the "Hatfields and the McCOYS", lol.

Lorie, do you have a local Farmers Market, they usually have farm fresh organic eggs for sale.

| Yes I was the chair person of the Farmers Market and we did have a lady selling eggs, I also know another gentleman that sells eggs so I can find them fairly easy I was just excited about my friend and I sharing eggs. Kind of a bummer we can't. |
