I'm going to be looking for a new vacuum cleaner and I thought I'd ask you farmgirls your opinions on what you like best. I have sculptured carpet in most of the house, commercial carpet in our office. We have a dog and a cat and I need something that is good for pet hair pick-up. Any suggestions??? THANKS! CJ

I know there are a lot of Dyson gals here, but I swear by my Oreck, very lightweight, Extra long cord, good suction(I have 5 dogs) & made in the USA. Also got the free iron & mini vac, plus a 3 yr warranty with 3 free yearly maintenance check ups where they clean & change belt etc. I had a Dyson canister & it is heavy, clogs up & I have to unlug 3 times to do my living room, whereas the Oreck I can do the whole thing, & have NEVER had it clog. |

No belts go for direct drive I have a hoover wind tunnel disposable bags and a Sears direct drive empty the cannister type if I had to buy another soon the sears would win. Check with your local vac repair guy he will get you squared away.
I love a new vacume I just wish they made a ride on one with a fork lift attachment for furniture. Diana

I have the same one as Alee. I love it. I have 4 long haired cats, and three dogs. I vacuum every day. Literally. I usually go through one of these each year but I know it will work, and its worth it to me. I wont buy a dyson, because if I pay $500 + dollars for a vacuum and it stops working after a year I will be devastated. Only thing I worry about is filling landfills up with my used vacuums. I wish there was a recycle place somewhere near here for stuff like that.

CJ- 8 years, 2 houses, and 3 different dogs ago, we bought a Rainbow. I will say that I would never use anything else again. It is definitely pricey but worth it. So far, it hasn't needed any work done on it, although it's time to get a new water basin, and it could use a tune up. I love that everything I pick up goes into the water basin, inluding dust, and stays there until I dump it out. I usually just dump it outside. I used my daughters Eureka capture the other day(she moved back home, and we keep that one upstairs) downstairs where the dogs are most of the time, and while it was neat to see the dog fur swirling in the canister, I didn't see that it did a better job on the carpet. And then the hose somehow came loose, filling the room with dust, which made me remember why I bought a Rainbow in the first place! :)

CJ: I wish I could give you advice on this topic. However, I HATE vacuum's. LOL. I have one of those Roomba's, I just let it do the work. I'd rather scrub toilets than vacuum. LOL Hope you find a good one. Marly

I am with you Marly.... I HATE vacuum's too! Unfortunately the house we live in house too much carpet and to boot its an off white... yuk! I am looking forward to the day when I only have carpeting in the bedrooms. I have a bagless Dirt Devil that is probably about five years old. It's ok but really if I didn't need it so bad I would burn it. It doesn't sit up good anymore and everyone time I need to move something and let go of it .....it falls over. I end up sucking up the curtains or stumping my toe into it when I try to catch it. I know people who consider it therapy to vacuum, but I put it off as long as possible. It could be I just haven't found the right one yet.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. Robert Brault |

Hey, thanks Farmgirls, for the tips, ideas and suggestions. It will all help when I get serious about looking. Hopefully I won't have to look to hard to pay too much! CJ
