My needle won't go all the way down. I've taken the needle out - cleaned out the bobbin area... I can't even turn the wheel so it will go down all the way.

Is there anything else I can do? Besides a repair shop? I'm trying to save some $$

Have you tried loosening the wheel all the way and then tightening it again?

This happened to me once and when I tried the suggestions given I ended up taking it in to the shop. There they found my feed dogs had jamed and that was the problem. It has been about 12 years now so I can not remember what the guy said about how they could be jamed but it took him about 5 minutes and they where good as new.

Good luck - bad time of year to have the machine acting up.

Mine was also not going all the way down and it was the timing of the bobbin and the needle. It got a 1 week vacation and the repair shop.

When was the last time that you oiled it? Could be the cause of the jam, and it is probably going to need a trip to the shop

If it feels like it is hitting something.....
Is your presser foot down?
Or is your bobbin carrage in correctly?

It may be hitting the housing for your bobbin, are you able to take the bobbin case out and watch as the needle comes down to see what it is hitting? If the needle is hitting the housing for the bobbin, it is definately the timing. Sorry, it happened to my machine a few years ago when I had the thread jam up and I had to "force" the wheel to bring the needle up.

sometimes a piece of fabric or a birds nest of thread can mess things up pretty badly....my advice is to start from the top, and slowly, deliberately take all the mechanical pieces out (the ones you are familiar with only) take the throat plate off and check under there.... REPLACE the needle .... take the bobbin and bobbin casing out, and make sure it's put back exactly like the book says (sometimes I put things in backwards by mistake)...you didn't say specifically what kind of machine....so if you don't have a book lots of times you can find info on the internet....let me know if any of this helps!

I had that happen once and I had hit a pin and forced it down into the bobbin casing. The pin would block the action and stop the needle from coming down. Clean it out as best you can and if that doesn't work you are better off taking it into the shop than trying to fix it yourself.
