Hi everyone,
I've been introduced to this wonderful website about a month or so ago. Been kinda checking things out, & figured I guess I should go thru the welcome forum & say hello. Still learning new stuff everyday with this computer age, like how, what, when, where, etc., they are great but can make you crazy, (like men sometimes, right!, although I'm lucky I have a good guy by my side.)
I'm part of the chapter of Southern Fried Farmgirls, fairly a new chapter, here just north of the Houston area, so far we are a small group, looking to grow. We are making our first outing together to go pick strawberries, the planned date is for April 12,weather premitting, after our next monthly meeting on April 8th,(so far always the second Saturday of the month, if someone is interested).
I've lived in Fla. when I was younger the Tampa/St.Petersburg area, lived in New England for years, & since then Texas. My heart is in New England, the change of seasons, the winter things to do,etc. But I must admit the longer I live down here & the older I get, it sure is nice to till the garden over in Feb.& start planting stuff, but I sure miss the fall colors, etc. I don't miss 6 months of winter though, I guess as they say "you got to take the good with the bad". A friend of mine came down from Conn. a few years ago for my son's Eagle Scout ceremony & going away into the Navy party, well he's funny & says "We live near the surface of the sun" & he'll only come back down here in the winter time! He is envious when we talk in the wintertime though.
So I say you just got to make enough money to go to the places you want, when you want. I am able to work a home-based business (helps folks for great tax advantages) with Shaklee Corp. It's a 50 year old company, very reputable,if anyone is interested in a business or just great natural, organic products, like pharmaceutical grade vitamins, clinicially tested. They made the first biodegradable cleaner on the market back in 1960 called Basic-H, has about a 1000 uses, good for the environment & our wallets too! So we have cleaners, natural make-up, personal care products, etc. all 100% money back guaranteed! So I feel like Shaklee is kinda farmgirl orientated, being natural. Has anyone ever noticed that there is a warning label on the store bought toothpastes, I was very surprised..If I can help, all we try to do is share a good thing, like we do on this website!! Anyways this message has gotten way longer than I meant, I've got to go plant some peppers & flowers, & pick some lettuce between the rainy days here this week. So best to everyone always & thanks for a great site for ladies to engage in, exchange info. etc.
Take care,Angel

Welcome Angel, I'm another Yankee transplant to Texas and I can relate to everything you wrote on that subject. I still miss the snow on Christmas morning, but being in West Texas we do occasionally get a snowfall, it's just gone before it can get grey and slushy. Gotta love that.
I understand there is a really great Farmgirl chapter just starting out in your area. I'm sure you'll hear from them soon, maybe you're close enough to join them.

Take care.

Welcome Angel! I'm a newbie here too. Funny when you mentioned "Basic H"! I grew up using Shaklee (haven't had any in years though) and we used it for everything, it was VERY useful on camping trips to use as a bug repellant and as soap too! (Tastes REALLY nasty if you accidentally get it in your mouth though!!! LOL)

I'm currently in the Tampa area, and loving the warmth of it....though I miss seeing a snowfall occasionally, and the Fall colors.

Welcome!

The end will justify the pain it took to get us here.

Angel,

I just joined this site and I plan to pick strawberries with ya'll if I can. I enjoyed reading your story and I can relate to what you are saying about the weather. I was born and raised in Texas and so I haven't gotten to experience the leaves changing colors or really even much of a winter. That is one of the reasons why we would like to move to either Arkansas or Missouri. I don't think I could take it much colder than that though. I can't wait to meet you at the next Southern Fried Farmgirls meeting. Do you have land or animals? If so how much? I love to hear everyones stories.

Welcome Angel! Shaklee products are the best. Love the protein drink and the scrubbing stuff that smells like cherries -- sorry can't remember the name.

Oh yeah, the protein drink! I hated it when I was a kid, my mom made me drink it (she was a Shaklee distributor at the time). I've found myself actually craving it from time to time as an adult though! ROFL Kay, are you talking about the scrub stuff that's in a little plastic jar? I remember some that smelled like bubble gum and we used it to scrub out the tub and the sinks.

The end will justify the pain it took to get us here.

Hi Angel!

So glad you joined in. The gals are great around here and you will certainly make tons of friends.

I laughed at your friend's comment.....we live near the surface of the sun.....what a great way to describe our heat, and funny, too. I've never lived anywhere else but down here in the Gulf area. I've lived in New Iberia, LA and in New Orleans.....the weather is the same....hot and sticky. I don't know anything any different. Sadly, I've never seen the fall colors or snow. What great memories you have of the New England area.

See ya' around!

Blessings
Catherine

Thank you so very much for such wonderfully warm welcome!! Sorry for not getting back earlier, but had to get away from the computer yesterday to get other things done, this website is addicting! Did get more garden work done yesterday, had some more rows to make & got some peppers in, didn't get the flowers in, so they just got watered till hopefully tomorrow, they'll see the ground/flower bed. Today was crazy, was called in to go help my husbands & his families business,(Automotive Air/Cond./Radiator/& exhaust work) folks didn't show up, etc. so he was short handed. Well,I got to wear the hat of picked-up & delivery driver, receptionist, etc. for the shop. Amazing how us ladies can wear so many hats..ha-ha. all the time, just part of life it seems.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the nice responses to Shaklee, I wasn't sure whether to mention it or not. The product some of you ladies mentioned that smells like bubble gum to clean with is called At-Ease, still in a jar, but now to stay up with the times I guess, there also is the liquid form for non-scratching.
My website is www.shaklee.net/allen if someone would like more info. or products,& yes the Basic-H is great stuff for so many things. I was turned onto the company in the 70's & loved the products, was going to work it as a business but I just didn't like inventory, deliveries, & collections (sound familiar, like what I had to do today for the shop, yuk) so I kinda let the opportunity get away from me. But now it's like a whole new company, with the internet & 800 #'s I don't have that baggage as I call it, anymore. Somethings ordered & just drop shipped to the customer if they want, I love it, now! Also having new products to stay on the cutting edge & management, international markets, etc. this time I'm not going to let this get away from me. So thank you again for a warm reception. I got to get to bed & catch some zzz's for now, cause I got to get up tomorrow at 4 in the morning,(I know many of you ladies that's probably your usual get up time, but for me it's usually 5:30-6:30) so later for now. Have a great weekend everyone. Got to read & see how to do these smiley faces & such, they are cute. So smilies to all, take care...Angel

BasicH question, it can be used for a "pesticide" on lawns/gardens, right? (and it's organic) I'm just wondering if it will do anything to fireants or fleas... I seem to remember putting it in a sprayer when I was growing up.

The end will justify the pain it took to get us here.

Hi Katee,
I thought (before this week went unexpectedly all crazy on me) that I had left you a message in reply to your question. In looking to follow-up with you I realize I hadn't (sorry) submitted the reply, of me telling you I know the Basic-H makes water wetter (I know sounds strange but true, can explain more if you want, it's cool) also good for the soil & helps with fleas, etc. Also, what I was going to tell you was that I would get more information. Well since I now have it, not sure what the mixture on the fleas I'll check into that.. Here's some info. I had & from others, more than you asked for but since many ladies had mentioned knowing about Basic-H thought of passing some of the 1001+ uses to help:
I have this on ants, have to check about fireants,
hate them their bites are awful!
From: "Tom & Pam Apple" This Basic-H mixture has worked great for folks on the small ants coming in around the kitchen window and the thresholds of the outside doors. Some people have concerns about the veg. oil used in the mixture, but it is needed to make it stick, and it is such a small amount that it has not stained or discolored our off-white carpeting. One of my customers was having problems with ants, had an exterminator spray around the outside of her house and inside around entryways, but still had a problem. She was thrilled with this simple mixture took care of the problem. Good luck!
ANTS & MISC. BUGS ENTERING HOME: Mix 1 tablespoon Basic-H or liquid dish detergent and 1 teaspoon vegetable oil (to make it stick) in 1 quart of water. Spray around basement drains, baseboards, doors & windows (inside & out), or other areas where bugs are entering. It is recommended that you repeat approximately once a month, if necessary. This is supposed to be safe for spraying as a fogger for mosquitoes, too.

From: "Patty Palma" Natural Weed Killer
1 gallon water
1 TBSP of Shaklee Basic H
1/2 cup of vinegar
Makes the best weed killer and it is safe

From:Barbara, Here is information about using Basic-H as a soil conditioner, gleaned from several documents I've collected, including a Shaklee brochure from 1995, and the "red" Agriculture Booklet. Basic-H Concentrated Soil Conditioner (no longer available) was just another name for our favorite household cleaner. In order for it to be sold to farmers, the product had to be packaged separately, and approved state by state for agricultural use. So, today we just use the Concentrated Organic Cleaner -- same product, same results!
1,000 sq ft is an area about 50 x 20. DO NOT apply mixture directly on growing plants other than grass.
1. When laying down sod, or on new fill soil: 1 pint Basic-H to 3 gallons water = covers 1,000 sq. ft. Apply to wet soil.
2. For problem soils, including clay: 1 pint Basic-H to 2-5 gallons water = covers 800-1,000 sq. ft. Apply to wet soil.
3. For general applications, including control of soil erosion: 1 gallon Basic-H to 40-50 gallons water = covers 1 acre.
4. For small applications, such as transplanting: 1 oz. (2 T) Basic-H to 1 gallon water.
Hope this helps!

From:abbie Fly Spray
I am using basic h as a fly spray on my horses and it works great. It keeps their coats soft and they don't mind it in fact they beg for it & it keeps all the biting bugs off of them. I dilute it 4 parts water to one part basic h. Which makes it very cheap fly spray!
