I would really like to see a being thrify section. It seems like many of us are, so it would be nice to have it all gathered up in one forum.

That's a good idea. I'd like to see that as well. I know I try to be thrifty but I sure have a long way to go and it would be nice to share ideas with each other. |

I totally agree! Maybe if I got thrifty enough I could quit my job. Dh is in total agreement on this, but so far the budget won't allow it.

That sounds like a great idea. I bet we all have tips we can share.

I'm getting really good & thrifty. Not in the league of washing out my sandwich bags and reusing them (don't use them to begin with), but in the past year we have paid off several items through funds saved by adjustments in living that have been easy to make and have not really even made a significant difference in how we live. I've researched (that's the reader in my) everywhere I can and have found lots of little odds and ends that add up. It's a great feeling to know that we're moving closer to me being a sahm again and possibly being relatively mortgage-free in 2 years.
I'd love to see a forum on this. I still have lots to learn and am willing to try anything!

Thrifty is my middle name. It looked like I was going to have to get a summer job (I work for a high school)this year. My hubby and I talked about it and put pen to paper. We decided that since we are empty nester (I've always had kids and shared them with him. Lucky man hey)Newlyweds, with a new house and having to get his business up and running again. ( no work since Sept. 05) That if we cut back no job. YEAH!!! The thought of being tied to a low paying retail job and having to work nights and weekends during the motorcycle season was a real bummer. So ladies I will need thrifty Ideas from you to help stay a float and to make it easier to cut back. I am low maintanance but sometimes fall of the wagon and splurge.![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)

I think a thrify section is a great idea. I am just getting ready to go out garage saleing to look for two new chairs for my house. Betty Jo have you though of selling stuff on ebay? I got to garage sales and the thrify stores in my area and find stuff that I think will sell then list it on ebay. i made a lot of my christmas money this way and it is how i am paying for going to Indiana in May for the birth of my Niece. Just a thought.

The last 2 summers, dh has gone to garage sales and bought things he knows will sell on ebay. He has made more than I thought he would, and that money has really helped in paying extra on bills.

I would love to see some good advice on how to make or save extra money. I always read articles with headlines like "Trim back your lifestyle" but the things they suggest eliminating are things I don't have anyway!
Makes me wish I had an expensive bad habit to give up, like smoking or drinking or watching cable shows.
Seriously, a frugal forum would be great.

Hey Farm Girls!!!

Oops sending this out again. What I started to say was that I would love to see posts on thrifty living or voluntary simplicity. I have managed to trim $2,000 off of my monthly budget in the last year but would like to cut out about another $500 monthly.
I would encourage everyone to look up the Voluntary Simplicity Movement in Google. It was started years ago by a man named Duane Elgin. I learned about it when I recently read a great book called "Don't Buy It" by Judith Levine, which should be available at your local library.

Hello all, Anyone have any ideas on private health insurance? Or insurance for the self-employed? Valerie, I have to tell you on Friday driving on my way to work I past a huge pile of household stuff that some one had left for the trashman. Not being able to stop killed me. When I got to work one of my co-workers pulled my aside and asked if I had seen the treasure pile I said yes but could not stop. That all changed when I was able to stop while transporting my students. I picked up a cool chair and there were other items like a neat bed frame, enamel top table and other large items but unfortunatly they have city pick up tags on them and if you get caught picking them up you can get a ticket for stealing. Funny you would think they city would say take it so we don't have to deal with it. I got a warning years ago. I tried knocking on the door but no one home. But the chair is cool. I did do some e-bay and I do e-bay for my husband (he sell antique motorcycle parts "motowille") but with moving we have had to put it aside for the time being. What type of items do you find sell the best for you on e-bay. I've done some linens, pottery, glasware and misc. But never really seem to make enough to cover my time. I love to garage sale shop and road pick so, maybe I should just put more time in it. I agree with the books that are to help you manage on less. If I had those items in my budget I would really be in trouble. I need other ideas or ways to cut. My friends and co-worker call me cheap. They just don't understand the feeling of not haveing a ton of bills to pay each month. I personally love being able to go to my mail box and not have to worry about who wants money and how much.
Pray for our troops to come home safe and soon. Enjoying the road to the simple life :>) |

Congratulations on your score, Betty Jo. The "sidewalk supermarket" is a great place to shop! Although you still have to watch out for impulse acquisitions...
I agree that selling online is of questionable profit. My husband does a little with music and recording equipment and it mostly just allows him to buy other, similar things. But that does keep those expenses out of the household budget.
The voluntary simplicity movement is great for people who are trying to trim back to a less complicated but still comfortable lifestyle. I'm looking for tips that will help me work my way up from a precarious and uncomfortable lifestyle to a more secure one. Suprisingly, there doesn't seem to be a lot of advice that applies to both situations. |

Amie,
The voluntary simplicity movement isn't just for people with already comfortable lifestyles. Check out simpleliving.net. You will find a wide variety of people there who are embracing the different aspects of the simplicity movement for a variety of reasons, from environmental, to physical(health-related), to financial. There have been threads where posters talk about the absolute craziest thing they've done to save money, from donating bodily fluids to dumpster diving behind restaurants, to selling their car and riding their bike everywhere. I would check it out. Julie |

Has there been any more thought on this? I think this would make a great forum! I know thrifty ideas probably fit under all the current headings, but it would be easier to have thrifty ideas all in one place. Best wishes, Jayne |
