Has anyone ever felted old wool sweaters and then cut them into squares to then sew together to make a scarf? I am in the process of felting (my house smells like wet sheep LOL) and cutting.

If so, what size squares did you cut?

How did you sew them together~by hand using a decorative stitch with embroidery floss or with a machine?

I cut mine into 7" squares, but they are really thick and just don't seem very snuggly. I'm definitely textile challenged but love trying. Any suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Vanessa

I have never done it but what I would probably do is make 5" squares and then blanket stitch around all and crochet them together with a coordinating color with 2 squares across and then however long. Just a thought. :)

Ooooooo that sounds like a neat idea. I tried felting once but I don't think I did it right. I'll have to give it another go sometime. I'm also trying to felt wool to make clothes for my snowmen.

Let's see what I might have up my sweater...

First not all wool will felt softly - when I do mine I look for sweaters with Cashmere, Angora Bunny or some of the softer wools like Merino because they will felt very quickly and also still come out soft and moveable.

Next I cut to whatever size width I want then I use my sewing machine on a zig zag stitch and the widest it will go. Butt the edge together but not like a regular seam. If you have a fancy machine what I do is I then also go back with some large scale decorative stitches to really get those to stay together but still be moveable. You can finish edges in a variety of ways - same style of machine stitching, hand stitching, you can make bias tape our of wool for the edges, you can knit, crocheting, embrodiery the sky is the limits. I love working felted materials together just consider them a blank canvas and you can have tons of fun projects in no time.

If you have any questions I will be more the willing to assist - have fun, good luck and let your creative spirit soar.
