I've been reading this for the last few days. It goes right along with you "can't put up a fence in the front of your yard" or any of the other "zoning regulations" that are becoming more and more evident in our small towns. Totally and utterly ridiculous. And, moving out in the country to avoid this idiocy (at least around here) isn't an option, because they keep selling up the farm land and those "pesky subdivisions with McMansions" are right next door to you again, complaining about your horse manure, or...your CLOTHESLINE.

I really do think that some people just like to hear themselves complain. I work in a residential home in the "Ritzy" part of town, they have went as far as complaining because we park our cars on the street and not all jam packed in the driveway and EVEN AS FAR as complaining because we have our front porch light on and its reflecting in their window. (The nearest neighbor is about 100 feet away) So by the time it gets to their house its very dim. Like i said i think sometimes people just like to hear themselves complain!

This is going too far! What a ridiculous thing to waste tax payers money on, I'll fight it, even though when I hang out my clothes, the resident flock of magpies poop on them....What is with this country and all of it's fussy, silly laws? I'm tired of it!

Sure am glad I live way out here in the "outback". No one sees my stuff hanging on the line unless they're out hunting or mowing the hay fields. I can pretty much do what I want out here. I don't think I could live in a place where there were rules like that.

I think its a shame that people can stop someone from hanging out laundry. Where has all the common sense gone? I remember years ago we lived in a small town and we put a mecury vapor light over the well house. We lived on 1/2 acre with a well. A lady drove up one day and said she lived about four blocks away and that she was sure it was our light that was keeping her awake at night. I told her she might try putting up a curtain. Really, what's this world coming to. I highly doubt she could see our light from her house. I think she wanted to complain. I know HOA are hard to live with these days. I hope I never have to live in one.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I was shocked when I read this...I was like you have to be kidding. I live on a small acreage where my neighbors all hang out their laundry when they can...I am lucky but I just can't understand why people have to complain about things that are really helping us be better to our earth.

We are all supposed to be doing our share to go "GREEN", and use less water, and no chemicals and not waste electricity and less waste and and and, but, when you want to do the right thing, and use a "GREEN" closeline, instead of gas or electric, someone is saying NO!!! Well i'm sure glad I don't live there, cause they would have to run me out on a rail, I have NEVER had a dryer, and when the weathers bad, they get hung in the house. If someone doesn't like the look of my bloomers or over the shoulder boulder holders, THEN DON"T LOOK!!! Or you may want to ask these people if "THEY" want to pay your utility bills, lol.

i read this post this morning then got on yahoo this afternoon and there was an article on there about it too!!!! What ever happened to our rights??? It was ok for the few complainings grangparents and great grandparents to hang out their laundry to dry. Guess they should go yell at Grammy for just doing what she knew to do before dryers...
I'm ranting again :)

I think the whole movement against hanging laundry is ridiculous. I'm glad my neighbors don't mind that I hang mine. Of course, the neighbors that live on the side of the house where I do hang my laundry happen to be my parents. :)

We've been house shopping for a few months and everytime something would come up in the real estate multilist database that was promising, my husband would look and say "NO" - he's not paying any Homeowner Association fees.
Well, that surprised me because he elected himself the president of our current neighborhood homeowner association (membership- 1 family - us!) and won't let me have a clothesline... That's evidently one of the made-up rules.
I don't understand why he has this prejudice against a laundry line - perhaps because his parents were immigrant family and back in the 50's, the immigrants were different (and discriminated against) because they had laundry outside?
At any rate, I would prefer to dry some of my clothes (especially sheets) outside, but I'm not going to fight him over this... It's pretty trivial when I think of all the wonderful things he does for me. And besides, it's actually easier to just use the dryer.

I have to say, in defense of HOA's,,,,in certain areas, they are a good thing.....their goal is to maintain communities & property values...That being said, neighbors should NOT be peeking over the fence to see what is in the other neighbors yard.....that's just plain snooping & controling.....
Our home back in Moorpark had a 6' tall fence, wood on both sides of the fence & block wall in the back. We did this because we had a Spa on the patio it afforded us privacy and made sure a child or pet did not fall in.
We had one of those retractable clothes lines which I used a lot in the summer and our neighbors knew we had the clothes line and had no issues with it. Sometimes if you have good neighbors, these issues are not issues at all...but it also goes w/o saying,,,some people love/live to fuss...It's their way or the highway!
Oh Brenda, I hear ya! my hubby hated it when I first started hanging out our laundry....he came from a family that was very wasteful & extravagent....after 37years of marriage(& re-training) he has learned to turn the lights & T.V. off when he leaves a room, thermastat is set lower/higher and that I WILL hang laundry...and I DO NOT use softeners & dryer sheets, nor do I toxic chemical our home! It's a wonder his family has any immune system at all concidering the amount of cleaning chemicals his mom used.....
I also believe that in some areas, where the hard working class live, having a dryer may be a luxury that they can not afford. I do not have an issue with them drying clothes on the line.
As for me, I love drying my clothes for free....plus there is just something thereputic about standing out in the sunshine, hanging up linens and things.

I lived in the city growing up and it was in the mid 50's, 60's and early 70's. We never had a dryer even when everyone else did! I remember I had to hang the clothes for Mother before going on a date! One time I had a girlfriend (who had a dryer!) come help hang the clothes so I could hurry and go out! To this day I still have dreams that I need to run outside and grab the clothes off the line because it had started to rain or the winds kicked up! When that did happen, all of us 5 kids would run and "snap" all the clothes off the clothesline while the clothes-pins flew through the air like popcorn!!!!! Those where the days my firend! xox

It's to bad that people have to complain so much about little stuff. I keep telling my self to bad that these people (complainers) didn't live back in the fifties and sixtes when there were no dryers are dishwashers. We hung our clothers out on the line or bad weather down in the basement. People seem to be just wastful and complain when people are trying to go "green". Just venting.

hahaha! Oh MaryJane,,, every now & then I too have to snap the laundry off the line real fast,,,but my clothes pins for the most part are decorated so I try to retrive them asap! haha!
Yep, we hung the laundry around the house, mostly in the kitchen & bathroom when the weather was not friendly. In Germany, when I needed an article of clothing(socks, undies) I would drap them over the radiator to dry faster. Boy things sure have changed...haven't they?

Love to hang clothes on the line in the summer, but I draw the line (no pun intended) when the temps drop in the fall. My mom would pin clothes up in the winter in northern Minnesota. At the end of the day, we would go out and retrieve them ... couldn't put them in the basket 'cause they were stiff as a board! Had to carry them in like dead bodies, thaw them out and hang them in the basement.

When I read that online the other day it made me so upset. Other than some years living in an apartment in town I've lived most of my life in a rural area where no one cares if you hang your laundry out or not. So I guess I have a hard time understanding why anyone would have a problem with it. With everything else going on in the world right now why would people complain about a clothesline?

Oh Sharon, that is so funny! Like dead bodies! I had never seen or heard of "stiff", frozen clothes like that until I watched Meet "Me in St. Louis" starring Judy Garland (and my most favorite movie by the way!) when they were in the back yard talking as the housekeeper took the clothes off the clothesline! She handed the son a pair of bloomers that were stiff! I really didn't know that that actually happened! Love it!
