I was sitting at the computer tonight when I heard a huge KA-BOOM!! then a series of smaller explosion popping sounds. I ran into the living room to see my husband looking at the front door. He yelled "Call 911 - the house at the end of the stree just exploded!!" I looked outside and the house, three houses down was a huge ball of flames - the entire structure went up within about a minute. It was such a helpless feeling - to stand out there by our car and feel the intense heat, not knowing whether the people who lived there were inside or not. The fire dept. is only 5 blocks away, but it is volunteer and it took about 10 minutes for them to get there. What we found out during the course of the evening is that the explosion was a large propane tank, then the small explosions were gasoline and ammunition and that the main fire that we could see was their two story shop - we don't know how the house is yet - but we do know both of them survived. It was very very scary for us - I can't imagine how it must have been for them. The neighbor across the stree said he saw a small fire reflected in his horse trailer, so he ran down there and saw the man standing in the yard trying to put a little fire out with his hose, when the explosion rocked the place. The electrical lines overhead also came down, so we were very fortunate on so many levels - it could have been so much worse. Please say a little prayer for these people - sorry, we don't know their names.

Oh, Sherri! My prayers are flying upwards as we speak. We had to stand back and watch as our neighbor's house burned a couple of years ago. It is tragic. I'm so glad the neighbors are okay, and that y'all are, too. My heart is with you!

Sherri, this is so strange. Last night on our news they told us this very thing happened to a house in one of the rural communities in the northern part of the state . The husband and wife noticed a small fire caused by a propane leak and were trying to put it out when it exploded. She has burns over 60% and he's in much worse shape. Strange that almost the exact thing happened near you! What a horrible thing to witness. I bet you didn't sleep very well.

Too scary! last summer my nephew's neighbors home burnt down when the car they were working on caught fire, they tought they could put it out. They lost the car & garage. But they were all OK. I'm sending my prayers to them. So thank-ful no one was killed.
Hope all your days are Sunnydays. dianebcarterhotmailcom.blogspot.com |

My goondness Sherri, I bet you didn't get any sleep last night after that. I know I wouldn't. Is there any update on the owners? Nancy Jo

When I got up this morning, the place was still smoking - even after record rainfall in the night. The fire truck went back there about 10:30 last night - lights going, so I'm assuming there must have been a flare-up. I'm surprised they didn't leave someone there all night. No word on the owners or the cause of the initial fire that caused the explosion yet.

The story was scarey, but I'm happy to hear the two people are okay. Marly

Thank God the people survived. Fires in the night are scary. My neighbor's house caught on fire during an ice storm--the fire dept. was spraying water on the roof and it froze almost instantly. It was kind of surreal. I have three smoke detectors in my house but fortunately, they haven't been put to the test. It must have been very frightening, wondering if the fire was going to spread. Praying that your future nights will be more peaceful. Cindy |
