OK gals, I am getting ready to move, and don't want the moving company to handle my knitting or sewing machines, just feel more secure if I move them myself.

The knitting machines pack up into their cases, which look like a long skinny suitcase, but I've never figured out what exactly to do with the stands that they sit on. The stands break down into the four legs and a long bar across, with crosspieces that bolt everything together. big long awkward pieces of metal. I was thinking of going to the fabric store to get some canvas to make a bag...

This morning I had a brainstorm - I think I will take a pair of old jeans and cut off the leg at the hip, then sew the bottom of the leg together. Then make a round (or square) piece out of the "bottom" of the jeans and sew it around the top. I'll make straps out of the other leg of the jeans (make a big loop, then attach it around the sides of the other leg to make handles).

The design issue I am having is whether to make the zipper opening at the end (where you would put your leg into if you were putting on the jeans), or split open the leg seam and run the zipper down the length of the "leg". I am thinking the second way might make it easier to attach the handles, and that way I might not even need to sew "around" the larger end of the leg, just flat seam across.

What do you think? Is this a crazy idea, like my husband says? (He says just use a big rubber band to hold the metal pieces together)

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands - You shall be happy and it shall be well with you. -Psalm 128.2

I think you have a great idea that will cost you only time. If you have the time. It will keep everything together, and protected. My husband used a jean leg to make a bag to hold the chimney cleaning rods. Added a strap to be able to carry it on your back, while you climb up the roof.
