do any of you have patches of Sweet Annie growing? Two years ago . .i had a 'forest' of it .. girlfriends and i picked it and hung it and crafted with it (i do believe it is one of my very most favorite 'nature aromas'). the next spring .. NOTHING .. not even one little sprout! i would run to where the sweet annie patch was every morning .. drop to the ground and SNIFF! NOTHING! THIS YEAR .. i see it cropping up in the strangest little places!
i have researched it on-line .. but have not read anywhere that it comes back every other year. anyone have any experience with this fragrant 'weed'?
ha! i'll be putting little fences all around wherever it hops up so honey hunk doesn't MOW it down! xo

Just a guess, but do you think you harvested too much and left nothing to go to seed???? Hope it shows up!

I have grown sweetannie and it is wonderful!!
But it kinda has a mind of it's own.
It will reseed, but you just never know where!!! I am sure it isn't a biennial plant.
I have plants all over the place!! I usually just transplant them to where I want them to be.
If anyone wants a start or two, we can trade or just send me whatever it cost to mail em'

I am sure you probably read this online already, but if not, here is some more info on Sweet Annie. Rebecca
Common Names:
Wormwood
Height:
36 - 60 inches.
Cultivar
Propagation:
By seed at 70°F, requires light to germinate.
Will self-sow if you let it go to seed (ill advised).
Full sun in average soil.
Disease:
Aphids love this plant.
Harvest:
Cut Sweet Annie before flowers open.
Drying:
Hang Sweet Annie upside down in dry, dark, open, airy place.
Uses:
Sweet Annie is an excellent dried flower filler. Used extensively as a dried flower wreath and swag base.
Comments:
Sweet Annie (annual) is an excellent deer deterrent (we grow it as a hedge for that reason).

Frannie gave me a bunch of sweet annie seeds and I was wondering about them and what's the best way to start them. Sow them indoors in seed pots or toss the seeds out in the garden? Any body know the best way to start 'em?

Frannie I can't imagine why you are having problems! Sweet Annie is very easy to grow normally. Here we do treat it as a annual-but it reseeds so prolifically that we are never without a new crop. If you have any bunches hangin' around just take a bit outdoors & crumble it over the garden...it'll pop right back up! Good Luck!

Hey bridge..I would LOVE to get some starts of sweet annie! I have wanted to grow it and never managed to find the seeds! I love the smell of it and would love to start it in a couple places to see where it wants to live the most. HOpefully close to my little funky patio we put in last year..I would love to be able to sit there and look out over the back where the garden and animals are and smell sweet annie!!
Just let me know what you want to swap..and I would LOVE to send postage money too...I am excited to get some!!

If you are growing Sweet Annie for the first time BEWARE! Under good conditions, one plant will grow as tall & wide as a good size Christmas tree! But it's soooo worth it!

didn't have not even one teeeeeeeeeeeeensy sweet annie plant pop back up last spring .. and i shook a ba-jillion seeds in the garden .. but THIS SPRING .. it is popping up in the craziest places! seeds must just BLOW to where they want to be! not the 'bumper crop' i had the first year .. but there are a good 20 plants here and there .. going to FENCE them in until i transplant them .. hope to get that big forest of them back someday!

| I must have the "wrong" kind of sweet annie, because mine stinks! I love the one that gets the little mustard flowers and has smaller leaves. Mine is grey-green and gets no flowers. |
