I'm begging for a fiddle for Christmas...I love mandolin too Rene! I have no music training, but I love to hear the fiddle (and mandolin, and lute, and....) so hopefully I'll be making horrible noise on the fiddle as soon as I get one to play around with

I learned classical violin, but loved the little fiddle bits we did now and then...but I haven't played in a year or two. I should pull it out, mm?

I've had such fun since taking up the fiddle this summer. I still squeak and squawk but it tickles my fancy. I think there should be a musical instrument badge - nothing says Do It Yourself like learning to entertain yourself and your family!

Karen, there is a good instruction book by Wayne Eberson called Old Time Fiddle for the Complete Ignoramus. It really is useful if you are teaching yourself to play.

It's the book I'm using and it really helped me get started. I supplement by visiting a fiddle teacher once or twice a month (whatever my wallet can afford) to help keep me motivated, but my favorite tune has been Blackest Crow from Wayne's book.

I bought my husband a fiddle for his birthday because I wanted one! HeHe!
I can play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Mary had a little lamb so far.
It is so fun to play and easier than learning my guitar!

How about a Farmgirl Fiddle (and mandolin) Showoff Session - we can set a date and on that date post a video on Youtube of us playing our best song. Just for smiles and giggles. Anybody interested? Would December 15 give everyone enough time for practicing a tune?

I'm going to hold myself to the date so I have some motivation to really practice! I'll post a link to my video here so everyone can get their Recommended Daily Allowance of squeaks and squawks. :-)

Ok, I kept my promise of recording myself playing. For good or for bad, it's located on the end of my podcast for December 14, located http://thefannyfarm.blogspot.com/2009/12/december-14th-podcast.html

(Just click in the grey box on the right side of the blog, on the date December 14.) I'm attempting The First Noel and I beg for good marks for bravery, if not talent. :-)

Kimberly Ann,I'm so sorry for not doing the recording-Christmas was rather crazy at work, and rather last min. at home. July 6 is my dads b day. I got an acoustic electric mandolin for Christmas,so now I can record thru my Mac. Will hold your feet to the fire on the jam. You mean jamming with other people?

I got a fiddle last year but due to teaching music I have not had that much of a chance. Kinda funny huh. I love how its informal and the soul in it.

Yep, Sherrie, I'm going to try to play with other fiddlers at a jam session. Gulp. Very scary stuff. But if I can get one tune good enough, I'm going to do it.

Bridget, jump on in and let's learn this together. :-)

Well, I have Old Joe Clark, Red-Haired Boy, Soldier's Joy, Pretty Little Dog, Cluck Old Hen and Blackest Crow that I could probably whip into shape. I'm thinking Red-Haired Boy or Old Joe Clark.
