My Blue Cuckoo Marans chicken escaped over the weekend - she managed to fly straight over a six foot high fence into the neighboring woods. We had guests coming over for dinner, so I was standing at my kitchen window looking out into the woods when I spotted her, blending in really well with the forest. I called for hubby and we scrambled next door into the woods with a can of oatmeal. We must have looked like crazy people calling out "frannie, frannie" and rattling the oatmeal, tossing it into the air, trying to lure our very skittish chicken back.

Finally, my husband herded her toward our fence and then gave her a good scare by tossing the empty oatmeal canister right by her. She flew straight up and back over our fence! Needless to say, her wing (and her sister's) are now clipped. What a crazy adventure it was!

Me too! We've had some terrible luck with our chickens. Our first three died of coryza and our black sexlink died from an impacted crop, after I tried to save her with surgery. It's been bleak fortunes for birds around here!
