As far as "stuff" as you get older??? What are your thoughts???
When I first left home...really left home, as in moved across the country by myself, I got a a bit of a materilistic binge for a year or 2. Clothes (still my downfall) were HUGE to me as I had never had that much that was new. Everything was hand me downs or yard sales finds, even up until I was around 18.
Then I started to collect this and thats and was spending, spending, spending....and just accumulating too much stuff.
Now, at 35, I want less and a more simple life. I feel like this is my time to fly and I don't want things holding me back or down. It is amazing how much less I am living with, even now. The purge continues and I get excited everytime something goes out the door. Also, it is nice to buy EXACTLY what I want and love, love, love it and not worry I made a bad purchase or spent foolishly. I have (almost) a place for everything and I know what I have and I use it. Gosh..by the time I am 50, I will probably be living out of a suitcase. LOL

I accumulate Stuff regularly and I Love my stuff... I started re accumulating when I returned to farmgirl life.. I am trying to be "careful what things I really need vs. want.. but it is challenging... I luckily have space for the overflow... and I really Need this Stuff... Or so I think... My Dh would like Less but I Like the farmgirl stuff too much to let go..and I just turned 62...

When we lost our house . . . and everything in it . . . in a fire 15 years ago we were given the opportunity to REALLY learn about "stuff". Yes, we have accumulated a lot stuff in these 15 years, but our attitude about it is different . . . we have less of a hold on it. I have also learned as I get older (will turn 61 in December) how to let a lot of attitude stuff from other people just wash on by and not get bent out of shape about it unless it is REALLY important. I also worry less about being an overachiever, trying to get everything done. Not enough time to do all that worrying and enjoy life!! CJ

You know CeeJay, that is a very important post you made. I think as I get older I think that is what I have noticed most about myself. I no longer care about "attitude stuff" other people try and give me. Like my sister in laws digs about how she thinks I should live my life(minus my grandkids around so much, and believing the only way to live is to spend winters in Fla. in a tiny trailer on a post stamp lot, I mean like so close you can touch)), believe me it's not that I don't like mobile homes I have had a lot of them and like them.I just don't want to winter anywhere but home. Or other people who don't understand our country style of living, or my live and let live attitude about most things. It's funny I will be 61 in November. Now I just tell them exactly how it is or I laugh at them. But, what is really funny is that I actually have gone back to the way I was when I was younger like 16, back to my true self, I didn't give a hoot about what other people thought then either! Heather, when you think about it maybe all the paring down and ridding ourselves of excess stuff in any area all comes back to the real reason is so we can actually be our true selves.Get back to what is really important to us and get rid of all the things and attitudes that can really mess us up and have us live in a way that really is not suited to us. I know you are a free spirit, all the excess of stuff whether it is material or others trying to run your life is something that you have for sure been systematically ridding your life of. Same with me. It can be a long journey, but OMG is it worth it.

I've told my daughter, who just turned 38, that life begins at 40. Then it really begins and starts getting really fun at 50 . . . you start to realize you no longer have to prove yourself to anyone, including yourself. At 60 . . . I say, world look out cuz I'm just starting to have fun!!! :) CJ

I turned 51 this year and boy oh boy do I agree with you CJ. If people don't like me I don't care and the ones that do like me are really good people and I adore them for just being themselves around me and letting me be myself around them. I am de- cluttering because I know eventually I can not take it with me and my daughter's taste and mine are so different that she won't want my stuff and I like to see people enjoy it now while I am still here. And besides the more I give away the less I have to do!!! My to do list gets smaller!!! hehehehehehe I am a crafter and I still have way to much stuff that I will never get done so might as well let some one else enjoy it.. hehehehehehe some one younger and has the energy and the time to do it. hehehehehe so I say the same thing my life is just getting good and I want to do what I want now and so I look at thing way differently than I did before. Here here for the people in their 50's!!!!

I'm getting close to 40 and I think I'm finally getting close to the "real me" instead of trying to fit in with what everyone expects. I'm not there yet but maybe by the time I'm 50 I'll have things figured out!

CJ a house fire is so scary, sorry you had to deal with that, Keep up the chit chat ladies it really helps me with my downsizing projects. I love stuff and I usually buy stuff to give as gifts to family & friends so the only time my house is almost clutter free is the day after Christmas. Truth is everyone loves the gas gift cards the most and they take up no room as I buy them the week before. But I love a good buy and visiting my friend Nancy so the thrift store is still in the picture. Maybe I should try that once a month instead of once a week.
Hope all your days are Sunnydays. dianebcarterhotmailcom.blogspot.com |

Unfortunately, I think our house fire is what caused me to become up a bit of a pack rat. Some idiot burned our house down when we were living in Arizona and we lost almost everything including family pictures and treasures. My kids did lose everything and we just had a few things left. Since the house couldn't be secured, 2 days later somebody broke in a stole a bunch of other things. I had a sewing machine my godmother had given me that I had had for over 17 years - in the shop once - and it was gone. The cops said everything had probably been taken to Mexico. Ever since then, I've tried to hang on to everything and kind of "hoard". Luckily, I married a wonderful man who understands, but he's also trying to help me let go. Reading MJF magazine and "listening" to all of you gals has helped a lot. Just last week I gave away 3 big boxes of clothing and stuff to our local women's shelter - so hopefully I'm getting better.
Thanks for letting me rant and listen in.
