I have a lot of books. Well less than I had a couple of moves ago, but still a lot. So I am wondering how you organize your book shelf? Is it alphabetical? By topic? By size?
I tend to group by size and topic. And I realized I always put the tallest books on one end and the shortest on the other. I am starting to wonder if I should put some big ones on both sides with the shortest in the middle. It would be different/interesting at the least.
Do you put knick nacks in with the books or just books? Are your books all in one location at your house or do you have several book cases?

Alee...we have 1,400 books in our library. (My oldest son's old bedroom) I organize them by topic. Homesteading, Gardening, Fiction, Non-Fiction....and then organize those shelves alphabetically by Author. You get the idea. I know that sounds kinda "anal" but when I need a book, I want to be able to find it.All the crafty books go in my sewing room.

Diane- LOL! If you saw my bookshelf right now you would know we are soul-sisters. But I am trying to get my act together because I am tired of wasting time looking for something or just feeling like my life is cluttered even though we really don't have too much stuff.
Debbie- Wow! You are an inspiration! I hope to eventually have a library like yours! How often do you completely dust/clean the library? That must be quite a chore!

For fiction I go by author, not alphabetical though just all the books by each one and tend to have favorites in clear, easy access kind of view The how to are in one area. somewhat by topic. Rae

Mine are a disorganized mess. It drives me crazy but I don't know where to start to get them organized.
Debbie, I wish my books were organized like yours. Maybe someday.

My books are organized by topic, i.e., cooking, gardening, sewing, quilting, building, animal, crafts/jewelry making, coffeetable, strange, and collectables. I mix the heights around on each shelf, paper/softbacks are also mixed in according to topic. I also have a fiction but not read yet shelf, those books don't last long cause I trade them with family and friends. I also have a childrens book shelf too.

Our books are organized by topic . . . makes it easier to know which shelf to look on. Sizes? depends on the shelf.

We have a library in our house filled with tons of books. My husband sorted them out by category but some day I would like to alphabetize them in their categories and make a list of all of our books.

I only have a couple of shelves devoted to books. Weeded the majority out years ago and now only keep the ones I know I'll re-read. They've evolved into two shelves for my books, fiction (grouped by author) then groups of sewing, inspirational and of course Mary Jane's are smack dab in the middle on the bottom of the two shelves (eye level). In another room I have two half shelves filled with gardening, birdwatching and dogs and herbs. My last shelf is old books: Jean Stratton Porter, Pearl Buck, Daphne du Maurier; as well as my Great Grandfathers church hymnal and some self published books by and about my Maternal Grandmother and Paternal Great Aunt.
None of my books take up the whole shelf and I have knick knacks and plants to fill in the spaces. Oh and my husband has an antique barrister bookcase filled with war books and war memorablia. I inherited the bookcase from an Uncle who DH was fond of so I let him have the bookcase and I must say he did a great job organizing and displaying his stuff.
Until this topic I didn't realize I actually have a "plan" for my books but re-reading my reply looks like I did this with great diliberation! I think I mainly just left the ones I kept in the general vacinity of where I sorted them, no real thought involved althought I like the outcome, LOL!

I think it is so neat how we all work out our own little systems. I have my school books towards the bottom, Nora's books on the very bottom shelf, then above the school books are our recreational reading books, and MaryJane and the MJF magazines have their own shelf that shares with my Dip Pen writing kit in it's decorative box, and Nora's photo albums. Above that is my Peace lily and some pictures.

I try....to organize my fiction alphabetically by author. And, yes, my children make fun of me. There are not many areas in my life that are organized so they don't understand why that is a priority Michele
