Has anyone ever grown this to repel moles & gophers?
What other things can you do to get rid of them without killing them.

Jerry Baker (America's Master Gardener), on his website he suggests used kitty litter. If you have a cat or know of a neighbor that does, this works pretty good at getting rid of the moles - I don't have gophers so not sure on that. They smell the kitty and get scared and leave. You put it down their holes. Since I have three cats, it is a good use for their litter and it seems to do the trick.

We have crazy gopher problems around here, and my dog has taken it upon herself to rid the yard of them and the field during water turns. That's not exactly in line with the "without killing" them, but is IS a natural thing...
In our orchard I might try the kitty litter - is it USED litter? If so, I may not. Sorry for the weird question, but...

Anne, you mean put the poopies in the gopher hole? Can you do this in a veggie garden, or do you risk spreading something from the poo to your veggies? My stand-by favorite for gophers is some (chocolate) Ex-Lax. I've mentioned this on some other thread too. It works, but kitty poo is free... Sharon

Yes, the poo. But in a veggie garden, no. I have raised beds and have never had moles in the veggies, however I get them in the lawn and flower garden. I use both the poo and the clumped stuff (kitty pee)because that is the most smelly and the moles hate it. We also have neighbor kitties that help with the moles too.

Thanks gals, I 'm going to try the poo idea. It is actually at my ma's house and she is set on trying the gopher purge plant. So I ordered the seeds for her(Like any good child would!!). I just hope it's not invasive and more trouble than the moles & gophers!!

Here's another tip from Jerry Baker -
A stick of Juicy Fruit chewing gum. Moles'll greedily eat the gum, but they can't digest it, so it's their last meal.
Not sure if this will work, but sounds interesting.

i think traps would be kinder, as the death would be quicker than starving to death with a big wad of juicy fruit in their gut.

"Man pee" works too. Have your "sweetie" if you have one use a milk carton for a while and you can pour a little on each mound. They hate it and leave. Some men do not object to just sprinkling the mound directly but that would be up to the man and privacy issues. If it is in a milk carton then the neighbors would just assume it was some sort of fertiliser. Eileen
