So many of your blogs are really beautiful. How do you get the backgrounds and music, and additional design things? I have searched on my blog dashboard for these capabilities, and cannot find them. What am I doing wrong?

My blog is with blogspot as your is. Thanks for the info, and I will keep trying to spiffy my site up. I love yours, and just now when I visited it, you had the same background as I was going to choose after visiting one of the sites you gave! :)

I only know the old original blogger (I think they call it traditional or something like that), that's what I chose in my dashboard, because that's what it was when I first got my blog, from blogger, around 2001. Any way, I chose back then the layout I liked most, then just played with the HTML to get the backgrounds and such that I liked. I have gotten most my stuff from-
Graphicgarden.com
countrypatchcollections.com
irenescorner.com
maryslittlelamb.com
I wish I could figure out the new layout stuff better, because I would like the drop down window for my archives. As when they changed to the new layout they took out you being able to have a separate archive page (so before you just had a link on your main blog that went to your archive page!) So now I have to have all the archives at the side, which since it's from 2001, is quite a bit. Thankfully I'm not a prolific blogger! hahaha
I also use playlist it's free, and easy.

Yup, with most backgrounds you add a code into the "add a gadget" thingy. Real easy and if ya don't like it....change it again. I am no wiz but even I can do this lol.
I sometimes use one that needs the HTML changed. A bit more daring but not too much. "add a gadget" is easier though ;)

I used to have music on my blog too, until one reader complained about it!!!! I was embarrassed, and took it off. I suggest if you put music on your blog that you put it far down on your page, instead of right at the beginning. And stick to less busy music and stick to low key music. Of course, my music was low key, but the person still complained. It was just mean, but I Have never dared to put it back on. Try playlist.com for music.

These are some great blog spots. Great work farmgirls. Heather, how long have you been doing this? I'd love to start a blog, but have no idea. I'm greener than green at this. One day, I'll give it a try. Until then, it's nice to look at all of the farmgirls ideas on blogs. Marly

I agree with Alee.
Back in the day, when all you could put on a site was Midi's. If you had to be on the site for very long it would get annoying hearing the same midi over and over. And no way to stop it. lol
I love play list because you can pause it.
I say this is a blog, if it's NOT for business do it how you like! If some one else doesn't like it......why do they need to go there? They can move on and go to a site they like! That was just mean spirited of the person, and obviously have way too much time of their hands to go around hurting other peoples feelings.
I will tell you though, don't worry about the "kind" of music you put on your blog. IE busy, not busy, something every one likes ect. I think like Alee the most important is it has a pause button. I also on purpose put it at the bottom of the page, so unless they scroll all the way down it doesn't even come on.
But, I can tell you I've learned a lot about the farm girls on this forum by the music THEY chose to put on their blogs! And some I just have to laugh at! There was one with some song with Richard Simmons on it I had never heard before! I had to go to playlist and get it for myself! It was hilarious! And yes that was on some Farm Girl from this forum's blog!
I love seeing what other people like, to me it is another way of getting to know them.
So Hosana, PLEASE put the music back on your page. And if you ever get another complaint like that, tell them to buzz off! And get a hobby!

Bear we were posting at the same time.
You can do this, it's very very easy!
I thought it had been since 2001, but when I looked at my archives it was at the beginning of 2002. (But, I had been doing HTML programing on websites since around 1995, back in the day when AOL would let you even make websites! Back then I had AOL, and they would give you HTML tutorials so you could make your own webpage on their server, then they went to something like Blogger is now, where you just click and pick, and now of course they don't offer them at all! hahaha) But, since I learned to do that way back in 1995, when blogger came out, it was no problem. I've always enjoyed writing my own script for my sites better then point and click any way (get things exactly how I want them). But, one day I'll learn Bloggers new stuff. For now I like mine how it is, except for my archive issue! hahaha

Hey Girls,
Thank you so much for the background links! Although I haven't yet figured out how to post multiple pictures, I was able to add a pretty background to my blog and it looks SO pretty!
Keep those helpful hints coming!

Lots of really good suggestions here. I set my music so that it does not start automatically, that way everyone is happy.

If someone is viewing blogs at work, or while the little one naps, the music can be disruptive. . . . Or if one's husband is watching 'John Adams' in the same room and one is viewing a blog, it can cause a wee problem! So I appreciate the option.

Jeannie - when you want to add a background go to one of the sites that were listed - Cutest Blog On The Block or The Background Fairy - are my favs. Find the one you like and copy the html code. Then go to your blog layout and add an html widget. Name it layout so you know what it is and past the html code in the blank space. Save and you're all set. I usually put my layout widget box in one of the spaces at the very bottom of my blog. I also just re-did mine to a 3 column blog. There is a link at the bottom of my blog to get the code to do that. But you have to have the Minima template chosen in order for it to work. You will also have to save all the html from all your widgets so that you can reinstall them on the new blog layout. Let me know if you need any help. I'm no expert but since I've done it once it was pretty easy.
I love music on my blog but realized that a lot of people don't so I stopped using it. When I do add it I don't use the automatic start so that people can choose to listen or not.
