DH and I have decided to set aside special time for each other and do special things together this year for Christmas. We have always enjoyed watching Christmas movies together. I usually make hot chocolate and cookies for him and we snuggle on the couch and to watch old movies like Holiday Inn, White Christmas, etc.
So, this year, to make sure we don't miss a moment of special time together I am going to devise a 12 days of Christmas schedule and plan something special for each night leading up to Christmas. We can drive around and look at the Christmas lights, watch movies, attend Midnight Mass, go Christmas shopping. There are a lot of things that are very special to us. But I am open to any suggestions. If anyone has ideas for other special activities we could do together for Christmas, please let me know. My creativity only goes so far, then my exhaustion kicks in. LOL!!!

What a great idea. Traditionally, though, the 12 days of Christmas start at Christmas and continue on into January...maybe that would be fun too and extend that quality time into the lull of the new year?

Church/school choir performances Bake and take cookies to the old folks home. Get a name off a give a gift tree and make something together for that person.

Great idea Diana! My husband and I usually adopt a family for Christmas. That is the best Christmas shopping we get to do. But I love the idea of taking cookies to the old folks home. That is excellent. I am adding it to my list.

I was going to suggest the Nursing Home or Operation Christmas Child too!
Michael and I built a fire pit in our back yard and we like to site outside in the evening (even in the Winter), bundle up and cuddle while percolating coffee on the fire and eating homemade pie :)Or you can toast some homemade marshmallows :)
Maybe you can go to craft fairs or bazaars together.

Visit an elderly or shut in neighbor and or donate food items to local food shelf. This is a great idea!

Our family always picks a family (usually needy or new to town...usually a family with children) and do somthing each night of the 12 days of Christmas and then a bigger something on Christmas eve. What we do depends on the family, but my kids love it! We have done a nativity set with a story for each piece the past two years...an idea from our own sunshine. She has the stories to print out from her blog if you are interested in that idea. We do it at night and sneaky-like..the kids LOVE that part. Some houses are easier to sneak up on than others..but so fun!!

Oh Jenny - I LOVE being sneaky! Doing things for others anonymously is sooooo much fun!!!!
Gail -I have a feeling that this year the needs of those who depend on food pantries, shelters and other charitable organizations will even greater than usual. Anything we can do to lend a hand will be needed.
Sharon - my mom and dad do that too!!! They have a fire pit outside and they sit out and drink cofee in front of the fire on the weekends. I love going to visit them, we spend most of our time sitting outside talking and drinking coffee. It's wonderfully relaxing.

Sarah,
Great idea. I did something similar for my son and his new bride last year.
Made felt mittens and stuffed each one with tickets to the movies, lazer tag, ice skating, cookies in a jar, everything for a romantic spaghetti dinner,
coffees and homemade coffee cake for breakfast in bed. Dates of special ecents in and around town.
This year they are moving to Cleveland, Ohio in mid November so I'm thinking about doing something similar with things in their new hometown

I am going to wrap up a Christmas book (that we already have) for each day of December for the kids to unwrap for story-time in the evenings. The only cost is wrapping paper and if you're like me...I'm sure there is no shortage of that around! I might even get crazy and put a video in there or have a new Christmas book awaiting! I think it will be a fun addition to our advent devotion time!
