Exploring Food Safety at Spokane’s Family Farm

Spokane, WA – Spokane’s Family Farm prides itself on high quality, local, safe, and nutritious milk produced in their facility just 13 miles west of Spokane. Spokane’s Family Farm utilizes renewable agriculture practices for benefits to both man and animals, as well as saving energy and creating a smaller carbon footprint. Cows at Spokane’s Family Farm are part of a 3 generation practice, which includes top genetics, clean and humane treatment, nutritious and natural feed, and low stress management. Their milk is “minimally” process using low temperature pasteurization that heats the milk to 145 degrees then cools it very quickly, killing the disease producing bacteria, and leaving much of the good bacteria that makes milk “live” and healthy.

On October 16th, 2009 Rural Roots and will host the eighth in a series of on-farm workshops designed to provide hands-on experience in assessing food safety risks. This friendly, farmer-to-farmer learning environment will help producers understand where food-borne illness can come into play and will provide them with low-cost options for ensuring food safety. The workshop at Spokane’s Family Farm will include milking equipment sanitation and pre/post milking sanitation procedures.
Come and see first-hand how potential food safety risks are addressed at the Spokane’s Family Farm and learn how to use Good Agricultural Practices developed by Cornell University to ensure product safety which can then be conveyed to customers. Participants will receive the Good Agricultural Practices Grower Self Assessment kits, valued at over $12, as well as other topic-specific educational resources.

Workshops are $10 each for Rural Roots members, $15 for non-members and $5 for students. Workshops are offered at a reduced rate due to support from the Western Center for Risk Management Education.
