Sublette Illinois is having a Farm Toy Show and they are adding an Apron Show as an added feature. It will be this Sunday, March 19th. A lady, Esther Duncan of Veedersburg, IN is giving a presentation on the legacy of the farm woman's apron, at 10am, noon, and at 2pm. In the newspaper I found this in, there was also an article (doesn't say who it was written by) titled, Find Out Uses for Aprons at apron show:
Most kids today don't know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion, was even used for cleaning out eggs, fussy chicks and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were the ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in the apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out on the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew that it was time to come in from the fields for dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that old-time apron that served so many purposes.
So there you have it...a nice little story for all you apron lovers out there. Sounds like it will be a nice show, there will be a craft show too.

Oh Chris what a wonderful story!! Its sooo true!! I love my apron and can remember my grandmothers aprons doing all of those things!! So are you going to go to the show? Tell us about it if you do!! I wish i was closer so i could go!!

Leah, yes I will be going and I will take notes and report back. They invited the public to bring any old (or new) aprons and apron stories. I don't recall my mom wearing an apron, and my grandma's died when I was very young - lucky you who have such nice memories! But when I have a grandaughter, you can bet she and I will wear matching aprons! I found an old book from 1953 - How To Make Aprons, by Roxa Wright, and it has 50 patterns for every kind of apron for every kind of work and 10 potholders too. Anyway, yes I'll report back.

How kewl! I've known about that toy show for years, but have never attended; I'm not that interested in toys. But I might go for the aprons. What a great idea!

I'm into ancestry and the earliest story I have is of my great-great-great grandmother smoking a cob pipe. Whenever someone was coming, she'd suffocate it in her apron. I was told she had many a burn mark in that ole' apron!

Ok, Sublette, IL is on Rt. 52 between Mendota and Amboy. It is North of Rt. 34, South of I-88 and Rt. 30, and it is West of Rt. 251 and Rt. 39, and east of Rt. 26. It is a very small town (about 500, if you blink, you might miss the town, so don't blink). They have a small map and shows the craft/apron show will be at the Our Lady Perpetual Help parish hall from 9am to 3pm, and it says there will be demonstrations (? talk about aprons I suppose) at 10am, noon, and 2pm. The church is located on Main St. east of Rt. 52 on the right (south) side of the street. They will be having a Firemen's pancake and sausage breakfast (7-noon), a farm toy show, sports card show, semi-tractor and antique truck show, antique tractor and farm machinery show and a model train layout (in various places thru-out town - all 9am - 3pm).
This will be their 24th annual toy show. So, that's all I know. For a better idea of where Sublette is, take a look on Mapquest or yahoo maps.

Rose Marie, that is too funny about your gr. gr. great grandmother smothering out her pipe in her apron! I'll be chuckling for a while about that one. Are there any stories that anyone would like me to share at the apron show? They said guests will be able to share memories of aprons from the past. Let me know and I'll take any/all stories with me.

Jan, I will be there early and will leave around noon as we have a birthday party we have to be at by 2pm. I was figurin to be at the 10am demonstration. And one other thing I forgot to mention is that it has an admission charge of $2.00 (I'm not sure if that's for the craft show and apron demonstration, or only the apron demonstration) the article was not real conclusive on the point. Anyway, I'll pin a fabric yoyo to my shoulder so you'll know me if you see me.

I have a great book on aprons, its called APRONS:ICONS OF THE AMERICAN HOME. Its 140 colored pages of aprons up through the years. It is available on amazon, in fact if you type in what I wrote above I think its the first book that comes up. Its a four star book, I love the pictures. Might help with the reserch for the mazazine.

Jan,
You may not notice me, but my husband walks with a cane, is tall and resembles Kenny Rogers (everyone says, "...did anyone ever tell you, you look like Kenny Rogers?" And he always answers, "You're the first one today!").

Oh how funny and clever his response ~~ I am going to try to sew a tiny little plaid apron to wear on my shoulder...
Would like to get up there in time for some pancakes...Nothing better than a pancake and sausage breakfast!

Hi Cyndi,
The craft show was nice and there were quite a few booths there. The apron demonstration was given by Esther Duncan and it was very informative. She displayed some of the aprons she has acquired, and some I saw that were very nice were made from flour/feed sacks and decorated with applique. She was enthusiastic and told about the legacy of the farm woman's apron. She also had aprons there for sale that she made. Every apron she constructs, that style belonged to a real farm woman and she has adapted the style to today's fabrics. I did buy an apron, but my problem is that it looks so nice that I really hate to wipe my hands on it. I was glad I went.
