I was reading Julia's blog and saw a picture of Dame Judi's picture of her garden. I am starting a yard with ugly grass. I have not been a big gardener, but I am doing as fast as I can. I took a class about raised bed gardens and I am waiting to get the eq. to build them (have to do in steps).

What I am wondering is if people would share pictures of their gardens. I looked as books and they are very intimidating. I really like regular people's gardens either flower or their veg. I am hoping to put veg in the back (very small yard front and back) and flowers mixed with veg. in the front.

Ok farmgirls it is time to brag and show me your stuff (please).

Hi SuzieQ - I have a real garden. I live right in town and have a regular size lot. The easiest way to see some of my garden is in my blog: www.ahealthygardener.com

Wow Gloria! Your garden looks just like one out of the books and magazines! It's beautiful!!

Suzie, I don't have any pics of my garden because it's not much to look at. I had a great harvest, but I don't keep my immaculate and it isn't very well organized. As long as you can keep the plants from getting choked out by weeds, fend off the insects, keep water and mulch on it when neccessary, I'm sure you will do very well.

Diana,
Do you mulch heavily? Your garden looks gorgeous. I wish mine looked so nice. I have a terrible infestation of grass. Looks like I will have to mulch heavily with newspaper next year.

Yes I put a heavy layer of newspaper and did about 5 min a day on weeds with a Hula hoe You can't beat it.
I also put grass clippings over the top and I have never had such a good garden.

Gloria I am hoping to start the master gardener class in Jan. Your grapes are beautiful. Hmmmm, maybe I can put some on my fence. Thanks for the idea.

Sarah, that is what I wanted was a real garden (the non-perfect one) In a class I took they said to put thick layers of newspaper and that helps kill the weeds and feeds the soil.

Diana what a beauty I am so proud for you. I want to grow up and be like you. The pictures were great to give me ideas for my yard.

Here are some photos from around our house over the past year or so, first being our tool shed clematis and part of my veggie garden

My perennial flower bed.

I try to amend soil from my compost on a regular basis and use as much captured rain water as I can.

This is the yarden at our old house. Sadly when it went on the market is was back to plain old sprinkled green grass

Our new place (we've been on the property since 05, in the house since 07) has been much slower to come together, there are many more plans than what is here now.

these are the gardens out the front door. The balsams went nuts and I didn't even plant dill, they came from leaving a bunch on the front porch for a couple of weeks last year

and the garden-garden in june (same pic that's in 'a farm of my own' section)

There are 8 raised beds in all. We are on high clay content soil, zone 5. There is a layer of brown cardboard inside the beds, some rocks, then compost and dirt. I mulch these beds with grass clippings and the flower beds with wood chips. This is their second season and we may add more straw bales next spring, we'll see how it goes. They were fast easy and cheap to put together.

Have fun creating
