Our school system has been hit hard by the flu bug this week. Last Friday, there were 30 kids sent home early from the middle school. Monday there were 60 kids out and yesterday there were 180-something kinds out at the middle school. My sis was listening to the radio on her way to work this morning. There are now at least a 100-something kids out from every school in Warrick County! That's from at least 10 schools. yesterday the principal of the BMS said they were at 15% of the school pop out sick and when it gets to 20% out they will close the school down.
All three of my kiddos are home today. They are better for the most part. So far no one has a fever today and their syptoms have lessened. They have to be fever-free for 24 hours. Oh how I wish it was tomorrow. Hahaha I'm just kidding.
Anyone else feeling the biteof the bug?

My youngest (15 yr old) has been home all week with flu-like symptoms...she also has excersize induced asthama, so the dr. wanted to see her to make sure there weren't any complications. They tested her for H1N1 and we'll know later today. The dr. said that we don't have any seasonal flu yet, so all the positive tests are H1N1. Thankfully there isn't any congestion in her lungs, but we need to keep her home for the rest of the week and that means she'll miss the cross-town soccer game tomorrow. She's pretty bummed. Hugs to your kids Melanie, and here's hoping for returned health soon!

We're so swamped with flu here that they aren't even doing bloodwork to identify whether it is H1N1 or the seasonal flu. And only select people are given anything more than over-the-counter remedies. The day I went in with all but two of the symptoms on the "hit list" they ended up calling in more ER docs because so many people showed up. It came into the area like a flood, all of a sudden, here were all these sick kids and some adults... And the flu shot wasn't even available here before it hit.
That was last week. This week, I'm still having some symptoms, but I'm functional and very careful to not spread it.
I'm a teacher. Can't take 2 weeks off with a flu (took 2 days). I've had up to 20% of my classes gone with it, starting about the second week of Sept. Most of our kids are back in school now. Some never did get sick. (Hope they don't ever.) Some kids missed 8 school days. I'd have a kid show up in class, normal as can be, then wham! Take the temp. 100+ send him to the sick room and call home. They were dropping like flies. Heartbreaking and scary how fast this bug attacks. I just hate seeing a sick kiddo.
My own daughter came down with flu (still not testing which kind) and I fought a bit to get her Tamiflu...it worked wonders for her, so I suspect she did have H1N1. She finishes her 5 days on it tonight. Whew! It was scary when her fever wouldn't come down and she was weak as a kitten. Last night she started laughing and wanting to play again, so I knew we were out of the woods. It's so different when it hits your kids, you know? I can deal with myself being sick, but not my child! Not anyone's child for that matter.

Oh, Rene' I'm so sorry to hear that. Has it improved at all? I'm down to just sinus pressure and exhaustion...can't think very clearly yet. But I'm just sure it has to end soon. Hang in there!

Our schools are out for the week...we have over 70% of the school out sick. YIKES!! I hope this dies down soon. I am doubling up on vitamins, hydrating like a crazy woman and getting out in the fresh air.

My 9 year old was hit hard over the weekend. Now it's the 16 year old. The hubby came home from work and was complaining of that old achey feeling. I just hope it doesn't hit me... I'm a teacher too and our schools are having a tough time. We aren't at the point where we need to shut down at all yet. There's some rule about numbers before it doesn't "count" with the state as an actual instructional day. Regardless, that temp is the toughy. Youngest was just hit with 103.5 right away out of the gate. I think the oldest has a different kind of flu though because he has the vomiting. Me? I'm taking vitamin C like crazy, washing my hands till they are pruney, and trying to sleep when I can. Unfortunately, it's the checking every 4 hours round the clock that has me all wonky. Was up at 3:30am to check on my son and here it is 5am and still awake.... Got to get up soon for work anyway but I'll be dragging! |

Our middle school school was hit hard, also. We had over 200 (209-230) kids out every day for about a week. That runs about 15% of our population also. I had one science class where 9 out of my 26 kids were out! Good news is, this week it seems to be dropping-we've been under 100 kids out for a few days now!

My son-in-law and 2-year-old granddaughter were both diagnosed with the swine flu this past Monday as a result of his older son exposing them when they went to visit his family in Iowa. They were both put on Tamiflu and are doing really well. They gave my daughter the same stuff as a preventative and she said it makes her feel awful - hurts her tummy. But they're doing very good right now. They came down for the weekend and are both very perky.
A gal where I work had it and was doing much better after 2 days - so I guess the Tamiflu is the stuff for this.
We've had a couple of kids here in OK that were deathly ill and in ICU and on life support. They are now at the Children's Center for rehabilitation beforfe they can go back to school.
