Has anyone read "The Singing Creek Where the Willows Grow; The Mystical Nature Diary of Opal Whitely"? I am re-reading it, and I had forgotten how lovely and strange it is - a diary written by an extrordinary little girl about her life on her farm and in the surrounding woods - it's transcribed from her diary and uses the strangest syntax. There's some controversy about whether or not she really wrote it, but I'm choosing to belive that she did. It's a wonderful read...

Oh I love to read and this sounds so great. I'm gonna check the library to see if they have it. I just finished The Mermaid Chair for book Club, It was o.k. I really liked Secret Life of Bees better.
I capture the Casltle is a cute book too. It is older and about a young girl growing up on remote property without all the modern conveniences and takes place in Europe somewhere or Ireland. It is a good one too.

The book sounds good Libbie, I just checked my local library and they have it!!
I'd like to think that she actually wrote it too, actually this synopsis:

My copy has the included Benjamin Hoff biography, and it is just SO interesting. I hope you like it - I absolutely loved it - it's just like entering the magical world of a child.

I just got the book from the library - very interesting - she sure was a highly intelligent young girl. I found her diary online for anyone who can't find the book!

| This sounds interesting. I've done a little searching on the web for info about Opal and the book, and I'm going to have to read it. I wonder if anyone's ever done any research comparing Opal to the fictional girl characters in books of the time, ie the Anne and Emily series by LM Montgomery, or the Gene Stratton-Porter books (Girl of the Limberlost). It would be fascinating to see how real life may have influenced fiction, and vice versa. |
