Good evening ladies, I have been busy the past few days and feel like I have missed all the fun on the porch. It is time to get things ready for my classroom and finish up last minute fair projects as our fair is in two weeks. Today there was not enough of me to be everywhere I was supposed to be. But tomorrow is another day. Hope yall haad a great day. I am having my evening tea, bath, and then fall to bed.

I now have 4 quarts of true dill spears and 4 pints, 3 jelly jars, and 1 quart of deluxe relish beside my other jars! I will be makin pickle slices tomorrow and some hot relish and hot dills. I was thinkin of doin a few jars of mixed pickled veges, but I don't really have much to mix. I guess I could do some pickled onions for my DH. He loves them with cream sauce over them. My onions are small and not doin the best, so there won't be any for the storage bins this fall. I might as well pickle them.
I now know why the porch was so quiet. You Ladies have been super busy! Everyone is doin so much I feel like I'm trailin behind the pack.
I want to have a koi pond, but DH says the big pond is enough. We do have a family of ducks in the big pond right now. They showed up a few days ago and now will come to us for treats when we holler 'Ducky Babies!'. They come right up and will eat by your feet if you drop any thing. My littlest is in love with them and shouts 'Ducks! Ducks!' everytime anyone gets near the door. She'll stand on the porch and watch them swim around the pond for hours. I have spent 3 hours readin on the porch today so she could watch them. Which is probably why I don't have all the pickles done. :) The ducks won't be here forever, the work around here will.
Enjoy your day while you have it, there won't be another one like it again!

Pam...loved the Video. Great garden marker idea! Is Craftster your regular job or is it just your fun job? I went on to watch 2 more of your demo's...how fun you are girlfriend and great ideas. The sheet you have hanging behind you in the video's...I use to have an identical set on my bed in the 70's. In fact I just got rid of the top sheet about 2 years ago (when I had to down-size...who knows maybe you bought it) LOL Yes, I loved the boots also!
Angela...I think you're beginning to make the rest of us look bad! Girl do you ever get out of the kitchen? LOL I use to be just like you but then I got old! So enjoy doing it while you still like to. Now, I freeze everything! Not as pretty but faster and my husband got sick of hauling all my canning stuff every time we moved...which was a lot for awhile in our lives. But I am reliving those days vicariously through you!
My dinner tonight with my fresh from the garden zucchini was fabulous and I did score points with my hubby. He knows that my favorite thing to make these days is "Reservations"! Just kidding!
Well, I am off to bed too after a little reading...if I can keep my eyes open that long.

It's my fun job. My day job is working with a criminal psychologist. I love doing the videos. They are so much fun. Last year Craftster flew me around the country to a bunch of craft shows too. I got to go to Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco a couple of times. I got to craft and got paid for it. I'm not doing as many shows this year because of the economy but I do one video a month and then help moderate the website.
The dogs got me up early again and now they are all snuggled around me sleeping. I'm up and ready to face the world, after a few cups of tea. I have some buttermilk biscuits left over from dinner last night-who has some jam-Angela?

Pam...wow working with a Criminal Psychololgist could be spooky, fun and frightfully depressing. Both my hubby and I were counselors...him longer than me, because I found out that I really didn't like knowing everyones deepest darkest depraved thoughts and secrets. And unfortunately even though I have studied lots of Psychology and I love people, I found that my calling is encouraging people.
Also, I believe that the answer to all problems in life and society is the Love of God and Relationship with Him (and I know not everyone agrees with that)...but if that didn't work for people, I didn't have a Plan B,C, and D. Where as my husband, even though a Pastor and also believes as I do obviously about God, he could come up with a Plan B, C, and D to help people if they couldn't grasp the whole 'God is the answer' thing. My husband has a Master's Degree in Family Counseling and I worked primarily with Women's Issues.
Like I said though, I look for the best in everybody and love to encourage their potential not deal with their baggage, drug, food & sex addictions or their cheating on their spouses or their terrible parenting skills. Could I do all that? Yes, but it depressed me and I am not intuitive enough to always see the bigger picture. Even in our Churches (because they are really hospitals for sinners not a club for the Saints) people deal with all the same ills of the World and I didn't like looking across the Isle knowing that this person was cheating on their spouse or that person had a computer porn addiction or this person has no respect for their children and wouldn't know how to show love if their life depended on it (and their children's lives do) or that husband is a control freak. I started seeing the secret-sins not the person and that is a heavy load to carry.
I have always known my Ministry was Teaching and Encouraging but I love people so much that I wanted to help them with their problems...but in the end I decided to let God do His work and I'll do mine. I am always a great listener to the hurts and frustrations of people but I promise to pray for them and not try to help FIX them. It works out much better for both parties, I'm sure.
Now back to the whole Criminal Psychology aspect...that kind of creeps me out even more (just personally speaking) because I don't want to know how the Psychotic Mind works, the criminally insane, or the Socio-path. That is just way to warped for me...but I do see how that we are all just one or two steps away from going off the deep-end ourselves at times. To me it is that whole inner struggle between good and evil. Wanting to always do what's right but not always being able to (which is normal human life), I don't want to even know how evil the mind is of the totally depraved person. The one who has no conscience, no remorse for their actions and no concern for the value of human life, the dignity of life or the rights & property of others. Mans inhumanity to man...to me, is the evilest form of depravity and insanity. And I don't want my mind going there and thinking about how sick of a society and world we can be. Makes me feel like I need to go wash-out my mind. I think that is why God promises us that we can have our minds renewed every morning in Him and His Word...because we need to not let evil get a foothold in our thoughts and minds especially when we live around it and amongst it all day everyday. I lead a pretty isolated life now that I am not counseling anymore and I love the inner peace and tranquility of that. No stress...fits me best! With Fybromyalgia stress is a killer on the brain and the pain. The nerves cause the muscles to tighten and spasm which causes intense pain through-out the body. So, I am better off concentrating on the positive side of life. I am glad you have your fun job to help balance your regular job or I would worry about how you cope with it all too.
Wow...aren't you glad you told me what you do for a living? LOL I really like your FUN job though! I bet that was a blast being able to travel, craft and get paid for it. And you are so good at it!
I hope you don't feel like I was knocking your other job Pam...I was really knocking myself and my inability to cope with that kind of high stress environment. And just relating to you, that I have been there, done that and found out that it wasn't for me. But my HAT goes off to those who can! Though I have my doubts that Criminally Insane people, Sex-offenders or Sociopaths can truly be helped. OK, off to more pleasant thoughts...
Buttermilk biscuits you say,...I would love some and I have some Lemon-Curd that would taste fabulous with them.
More later girls. Hugs, ~peggy

Of course I have some! What would you like with those biscuits? I have violet, rose, mt dew, root beer, crab apple butter, mulberry, and strawberry! I can't wait for this fall, I'll have elderberry and grape then! I've even been thinkin of tryin to make up some tomato jam.
Pam, you are really somethin girl! You work with a criminal psychologist and Craftster! Wow! My life only invovles somethin that interestin when I'm watchin tv. I've always thought crime shows were so fascinatin, but only the real ones. I don't get into all the csi or svu things, only the documentory type shows. I love to do my own things to decorate with and I'm tryin to learn to sew, but I'd never make it professionally! I just like to play around with stuff. I have had a couple of local craft/gift shops want to carry some of my beadwork, but they want it mass produced and all lookin identical. That would make it boring and teadious. I enjoy my little crafts and don't want that ruined. Especially my beadwork. I learned that from a dear friend from my childhood and he isn't able to travel anymore, so I don't get to see him much.
Peggy, way to go earnin points with the Hubby! I love to do those kinda dinners. My girls tease me and call them slop bucket dinners, but they always love them and eat seconds!
Megan, believe it or not, I'm really not that busy. Thanks to Alee and a few of the other ladies who have helped me with my house organizin problem, I now have the time to really work my kitchen. I love my time cookin and cannin and I'm learnin new things, like bakin bread! My house isn't perfect, but it's not a total disaster anymore. It looks lived in, but not piled up. I am lovin the extra time and I need it to keep the garden from goin to waste.
I am makin more pickles and pickin tomatoes today. I might try to get the rest of the onions dug today too. That all depends on the weather.

That's why I love the porchies......we're all so diverse and yet we love chatting with one another about anything from slopping hogs to hanging sheets, and reaching into the far corners of one's mind...LOL! You all make my day!!! I've been working on an application all day, actually this is the second day...I had to go into a Zen Self Assessment in order to complete page four....I sure hope it makes sense when I'm all finished with the darn thing...egads! Have a great day! I have to go get ready for my little no brainer job now.. |

Hi friends...update on Aryanna...Urinary tract infection not pneumonia...I said to Kellie can't be she has no cough or congestion. Long story short when she saw her own pediatrician on Tuesday she said no pneumonia...get a urine done..it's a UTI. She is 100% better. Poor little girlfriend, that's what I call her! Now for the best part she wasn't seen by a Doctor in the ER she was seen by a Physician's Assistant. That infuriates me. I know alot of very good PA'S but not in a baby's ER situation. I have seen UTI'S turn a patient septic and sometimes they have died. The babies and elderly are most at risk.
Peg...I think I should paint Ethel too. I have to give it some thought. We'll go blowin in the wind with our beautiful white hair blowin as we go. We'll pick up Pam and anyone else who wants to come along. Surely Lida will want to get some miles in, right? I know I can't ride as far as she can though! LOL
I used to be the 11pm-7am nurse in a prison and I know all to well the different minds of the sociopaths. I was verbally abused by a murderer once and the swat team had to come in and drag him into solitary. Months later same person called me to his cell and apologized for his actions. Needless to say I stood far enough away, outside his cell, so I wouldn't get shanked just in case he had other ideas.
Angela...tell me how you do your poppers. I love poppers. Do you ever put cream cheese or pepper jack cheese in them? What I'm interested in is the coating and does it stick to the peppers? Thanks girlfriend.
I have to leave...waiting for Kellie to pick the boys up. Hubby getting annoyed and says, I love the kids but enough is enough...I wasted the whole day today! Whatever...It's always about him! Like he did anything!
Later Friends, Darlene |

I worked for a women's crisis line for 8 years (Domestic violence/sexual assault and mental health/homeless) then worked with offenders at the same time. That lasted a year. Now I work with a criminal psychologist. We have a lot of high profile cases and deal with murder, abuse, assault. The worst of the worst. It gets to me from time to time. Seeing how family and drugs play into shaping us is really amazing but it has definitely jaded me. I'm much less sympathetic to people who commit crimes when before I worked here I worked with prison reform as a volunteer. I have a lot in my life that balances everything out. I come here and it's like a big hug. I love it! I am planning on getting out of this field. Peggy-I don't think you are knocking my job at all. It's not a glamorous or fun job-it's interesting but very taxing. Just the other day, I went home and just cried because of the person I had to deal with.
My next adventure is working with rural and urban communities to bridge gaps and to see how we can work together and how we are not so different. It's my belief that one can not function without the other. I also want to do some awareness around family farms and farm workers. I'm not sure how I want to do this but it will come to me.
Angela-you are the canning queen! I don't know how you take care of a family and find time to do all the things that you do.

Wow we have all been so busy of late. Angela, boy do I know the feeling. Canned mushrooms today. Not as much as you put up but I am trying to put up half my stuff in cans, half in the freezer. I have a really bad back so some days just can't stand that long. Grandkids came over today so had them picking tomatoes in the garden. So now have another batch of tomatoes to can or freeze. Only have a small chest freezer now that only 1 of out 7 kids is still at home. Need to save space for berries and meat. Mushrooms about ready to come out of the canner so will rest a little then start on squash/corn chowder for dinner and a blueberry cobbler. Oh I also froze 4 bags of blueberries this morning. I just know they will make a great cobbler around the holidays. PeggyAnn I know what you mean about stress. That stuff will kill you. I try to avoid it. Not so easy to do with 7 kids (and spouses), 7 grandkids, 1 teenager at home, a hubby with a mid-life crisis (lost job after almost 30 yrs. Was just rehired at a 25% pay cut) and my own mid-life issues to deal with. Lol without my faith I would be a mess. And hurry up and paint that bike. I want to see her sooo bad. Well guys timer just went off for canner. Time to go back to work. I say we all need a little break before school starts back up. Lets meet up on the pourch and plan our runaway. HeHe. You think MaryJane would mind if we all showed up at once and took over those cute little tents? I call dibs on one of those outside tubs! Where would you ladies like to go?
Every Day is a gift from God, Rejoice and be glad in it. |

Darlene, I kinda cheat with my peppers. I split them in half and clean them. Melt the cheese enough to be gooey and it will stick to the pepper better. Then I freeze them. I mix up whatever kind of batter I have the stuff for, corn dog coating, chicken batter, whatever, as long as it's not runny. My DH loves the one I made up. I mix cornmeal with a good squirt or two of honey, 1 or 2 eggs, and enough milk to make it like a thick syrup. The amounts depends on how many your makin, smaller amounts require 1 egg and less cornmeal, and so forth. Once the peppers are frozen i dip them in the batter and refreeze. For a really yummy popper you redip about 3 hours later. The batter sticks better to frozen peppers than to fresh ones. You can keep them in the freezer in bags or containers for a long time, but ours never make it very long. You can use cream cheese, just let it set out and soften a little, then smear it inside the pepper!
Pam, I have learned how to delegate jobs to the girls and Hubby. I have also learned how to accept a less than perfect finished product when others are doin the work. I think that was the hardest part. Not runnin behind and refoldin the towels, or restackin the dishes in the drainer, or monitorin the exact amount of each spice put into dinner. We have ate a few very bland meals as the girls slowly lose their fear of the spice cabinet. They are learnin to sniff the spices and then sniff the meal as it's cookin to be sure they can smell the spices in there. I have seen them changin and addin to my recipes, so I'm doin somethin right!

HI Porchies...I love you all! It is so great to come together everyday or every few days and just share life, good, bad or indifferent. There is nothing boring about us that's for sure.
Pam...thanks for explaining more about what you did & do and pointing out that it isn't the glamorous job that books, television and the movies make it out to be. My sister...was a Bailiff for almost 20 yrs and the stress really got to her too. And even though she had a very compassionate heart and was top-notch on her job...she became very jaded working with criminals everyday. She had some very close calls transporting prisoners from Jail to Court back in the days when Bailiffs had to do that and weren't allowed to carry guns. She is 5ft 4 and weighed about 110lbs. One day she had a prisoner try to make a run for it and he started running down the Court House Stairs (inside) and she jumped on his back, grabbed on to his hair and rode him all the way down to the bottom...where a couple gaurds helped her finish taking the guy down. Both her and her Judge's lives were threatened numerous times over the years. My sister worked for a Woman Judge. So, yeah...there is nothing glamorous with those kinds of jobs. Pam - what you are contemplating for your future...sounds much more rewarding and if anybody can re-invent themselves and what they want to do...it is you girl!
Darlene...you are so darn cute! Yeah, I am sure Pam and Lida would ride with us. We'd be so busy talken we definitely wouldn't make it very far. So it's a good thing Lida doesn't bike as far anymore. And you know Pam...she hits walls now and again and breaks a nail and I'm not even sure I won't fall off my Three Wheeler, But I guarantee we'd be laughing our heads off!
Marla...those cute little Tents would be just what we all need for a bit of stress relief...I want one with a claw-foot Red Bathtub and a lot of candles and bubble bath! Call MaryJane and tell her we're coming (and no not by bicycles and trikes). LOL
Monica...You are right, aren't we all unique and diverse? That is exactly what makes the World go Round! And makes The Porch (Our Porch) such a special place to come to.
Angela...I agree with Pam, when you come to the Porch tonight we are going to Crown YOU Queen Of The Royal Canning Brigade! Or Queen of The Kitchen!
OK...I feel like it is 9:00 at night and I haven't done much of anything today but talk. Which you've probably noticed is one of my favorite things to do. But now I am worn out from doing nothing and I need a little nap. So, I will go snuggle with my little Bella Dog and rest fur awhile. Hee Hee!
Blessings, ~peg

Angela, it sounds like you have a fun little family! I wish I can meet you someday! Well, today I had a running thing in the morning, but it was really fun because my best friend were the only ones who showed up. Then afterwards we went to this cute little breakfast place called Nora B's. I had a very delicious brunch. Then I went to the library for a writing class. Now I'm home, talking to all the porchies! Then later I have basketball practice. Whoo, full day! Hope everyone's day goes well! God's Blessings, Megan aka Loretta Rae

Peg...Come on over to my house, I have a red outdoor clawfoot tub. There's lavender planted in front with angels in the lavender. Also a lg 3 ft angel in between the red tub and the orange tub. I'll put candles out for you! The water feels like a bath, it will help your fibro! It's heavenly in the dark. I have solar lites and a butterfly that changes color.
Thanks Angela. I already cleaned and froze the peppers whole so they will be easy to fill. I'll have to get some breading and then do them.

I want an outside tub so bad. My DH said the neighbors already think we are crazy and he doesn't want to give them proof!
I was havin a stressful day. So I took a nap. My mom went to the hospital and the kids were all bein grumpy and grouchy, so I left them to fight it out with each other and I took a nap. My DH warmed up some leftovers and the girls helped him spice it up a little, so I woke up to a warm dinner and I didn't have to cook it! My mom is on her way home, they have scheduled a bunch of tests and stuff. She's been pretty sick for months now and no one seems to know why. I guess it proves that medicine is only an educated guessin game. They've changed her medications agian, but that hasn't helped the other 5 times they've done it.
I'm gonna sit here with my coffe and think of all the wonderful goodies I'd like to make and can. I was called and told there are three plots at the community gardens that the people don't want the produce from. The gentleman runnin the garden thought we could use the produce with my DH havin been out of work all last year. We now have lots of green beans, tomatoes, melons, squash, and peppers! I have 32 cases of quart jars that I managed to get for half price, now I can fill them! I'm gonna try to track down a recipe for cantalope jam. My grandma said she had a neighbor that made it years ago, maybe I can find somethin online.

I had running this morning, then rushed off to the library, then had basketball practice where we did mucho mucho sprints! But tomorrow I'll have a good farmgirlish day relaxing at home. Good night porchies! God's Blessings, Megan aka Loretta Rae
