crazy cold here... and gusty...-6 at 10 pm. That's just toooooo cold folks. The Republic of Tea just sent me another tea sample along with their catalogue. A Downton Abbey tea called English rose tea. This is hot beverage weather for sure. Sure hope everybody's animals are in a warm shelter. They deserve that courtesy too for all they do for us. Enjoyed the wedding pics too girls. Both girls looked lovely in their dresses. Well, I postponed Mama's appointments until the end of the month. Nobody needs to go out in this weather. Peggy, I did tell Dave, when that happened to him that I was going to buy him a spider-man or bat-man lunchbox.(his 2 favorite characters)hahaha I too love the diversity of books on tape. I can't sit still too long. I'm up and down half a dozen times when I watch a movie. I hate to sit. Tonight I got on my stepper during a movie I was watching. Kills 2 birds with one stone. (Then I had a bowl of ice cream) hahaha Cherime, sure hope you are over the "crud" by now, you poor girly. Well, stay warm Porchies! Love yuns!

Hope everybody is staying warm. The cold has been unbelievable here even for us. M*'s truck wouldn't start this morning so I had to take him to work and pick him up. When I walked out of work tonight it felt almost balmy at -9 until the wind hit me. It's actually supposed to get up to about 30' this weekend. It will feel like short weather lol. Schools were cancelled and daycares were closed today due to the windchill.
I stayed in all weekend like I planned. Here's a pic of what I got accomplished: 22 pints of pinto beans, 6 quarts kidney beans, 1 quart of Great Northern beans, 6 pints of chickpeas, and 1 pint of Great Northern.
PeggyAnn - how are you feeling? I hope you're right and it's allergies and not another cold. This year has been horrible for everybody. The books you mentioned sound wonderful. I'll have to check them out. Have you tried All You Can Books? I just signed up for it. You can download unlimited books and audiobooks each month for $14.99 unlike Audible where you can only get one book per month for the lowest subscription. I downloaded Pride and Prejudice to listen to along with a couple others. I'm trying it out to see if it's worth continuing. I like listening to them at work while working. Some of the people in the cubes by me talk too much and I listen to Pandora and audiobooks now to block them out as much as possible.
Judy - how was that tea? Sounds delicious. I'm sipping on some Mexican Hot Chocolate to warm myself up. I got home and our house was only 60' - the furnace had quit working again. We had them come in over a month ago to find out what was wrong and they were supposed to order parts and still haven't installed them.
Cherime - how are you doing? Getting over your bug?

Good Evening Girlies...
Brrrrr you girls are making me cold...talken about all those low temps. That is just crazy weather! I am glad that I am right here in the P.N.W. where we just get drizzle and a little cold weather here and there.
Judy...how do you get all these free tea samples girl??? I do hope it was nice and warm and yummy. Good for your c.o.l.d. weather blues. How many of you Porchies watch Down Town Abbey? I have never seen it but I am thinking about reading some of the books. My DH doesn't like British shows...usually he can't understand their heavy accents. But I think I would like it. I like rose tea. Let us know how you liked that one.
Teacher Tammy...Maybe you will have the whole week off school. That would be good huh? Not good for the paycheck but good for some more rest and relaxation. Did you enjoy the Whispers of Hope Tammy?
PG Tammy...I haven't heard of that Audio Book Source before. I will have to check it out. Thanks for the tip. I do like Audible even though they charge so much a month. Those pint jars all look so pretty on your counter. I always loved how beautiful my jars of Fruit looked when canned all up. Peaches, Cherries and more. And they tasted so much better than anything from the grocery store.
Didn't do much today. The weather has changed back to rain for the next 7 days...so, I was really tired all day long. Started the book The Orchardist...can't start the Great Pearl Heist until after this Thursday...when review our last book. I'm on my fifth book since we read the other book called Carissama. I hope I can even remember enough of that book to discuss it. LOL
OK...off for my tea and read...
Hugs and Smiles, Peggy

Good morning everyone. My baby boy arrived at Marine basic training in San Diego yesterday. I'm a bit down about it. He joined out of frustration. He didn't have money for college and couldn't get a decent job. So felt this was the only way to survive. Sad that our economy puts young people in that kind of state of mind.
I signed into all my online classes yesterday. 4 in all. It took me almost all day to check in and do all the first day requirements. It is going to be quite a bit of work. Each class said I should expect 9 hours of work for each class. Good thing I don't have a job! No more sales from my Etsy store. But I figure it's just from the January blues. The magazine comes out soon and hopefully I'll get busy again.
Peggy, I think you would like Downton Abby. They are easy to understand I think.
Gp Tammy lots of work there! Good for you. Bummer about M's truck not starting. Was it because of the weather?
I sure hope it warms up a little for you guys. People can't stay away from work for too much longer. I know some places people have been told to not drive anywhere because of the cold. Of course California is having a drought. The ski resorts are making their own snow to stay open.
Well, I need to get cracking on my school work.
Later everyone...stay warm!!!

Getting there with fighting off the crud. I was working on a fantasy story about a young man and his very large cat on a desert world somewhere in a far galaxy. The cat is trying to teach the young man about forgiveness. He has issues. This one is not a format story in any sense. Sometimes I have to walk away from it and come back later when I have thought things through. This just might be a year in the telling. A quote from Cat to the boy. "Forgiveness is the lifeblood of love and hope is the river the ship sails on." Anyway, it was 40 plus, YES 40 Degrees ABOVE zero here yesterday. I turned off the heat and opened all the doors and windows. Gave the place a good airing out. We really do not have much snow either. Sorry for all who are presently enduring our usual weather. Believe me we are all up here chuckling as schools are being closed and North Carolinian's pipes are freezing. We do understand your pain. As far as I am concerned, it's almost spring. As soon as we get through January we are on the flip side. Stay cozy all. God bless and thanks for the healthy thoughts and prayers.

Boy you girls are having some really cold weather, of course except for Cherime. Even we are experiencing cold weather for us even though it is not as cold as you. But I do not own a coat and for us to have temps in the high 30s for Florida really makes it difficult to say the least.
Teacher Tammy, Those were some beautiful wedding pictures. Where in Japan is he going to? I lived three years in Yokosuka back in '79-'81.
Peggy, those were some beautiful wedding pictures also. I can tell you are delighted with the how the wedding came out.
Tammy, sorry to hear about your sons health. Can be a real pain living with pain all the time. I hope you get answers and he finds relief soon.
Judy, loved the story about your hubby. My husband has a lunch pail so I don't think that would happen to him but you can never tell especially when he gets behind and tries to rush out the door.
Bunny, what classes are you taking this semester. I also have four classes. The bad part of my classes is they are all writing and I really need to brush up (or I should say learn grammar and punctuation). I am what I would consider very poor at it. But it is only the first week of school and I can learn right?
Nothing much going on in my part of the world. My hubby and I just started back to school this semester and I graduated from community college so now I am up at the university with the big kids and boy is it different. I am now in the meat and potatoes of my degree and the homework is really overwhelming after one day of school. I have 3 online classes and 1 in a classroom. I have lots of crafts that I had completed over the holidays and still so many more to do. I was able to complete 3 major projects that I wanted before school start however, the rest will have to wait until spring break. Stay warm ladies. I had better get back to the books. Tons of homework to complete by Sunday. Becky
May the stars carry your sadness away. May the flowers fill your heart with beauty, and may hope forever wipe away your tears. |

Alicia, Dear, It's ok, it will taste just as yummy or even more so when we get it. I just want to thank you for seeing it thru no matter what. Last year was a tough one for a lot of us. You all came thru with your teas and I am proud of you. Pat yourselves on the back. That Downton Abbey English Rose tea was really different and really good. It was fruity, floral and just a tad sweet. I get my free teas from The Republic of Tea out of Novato, CA. If you ask for a catalogue, they send you a free sample everytime they send you the catalogue. Give it a whirl. I've received some pretty nice teas from them. Well, we survived -9 temps and gusty winds last night. It made for fitful sleeping though, I can tell you that. Every time I heard a gust of wind and felt it shake the house, I said a Prayer for family, friends and animals. Tonight isn't suppose to be as bad. It should only go down to...(0). I know, what? really? BUT...no gusts. hooray...I can sleep. My bedroom is on the NW side of the house...upstairs, so I feel and hear all the weather. *sigh* Oh yea, today we had a high of +9 & sun. ~weeee~ Well, time for a cuppa tea and a movie...something sunny and warm. Nite girlies!

Howdy girls, I survived the first day back to school and amazingly the little butterflies were pretty good today. They earned the right to sit in groups rather than rows. Not sure how long that will last but hey I will take this good day. Still very cold here. But better than yesterday.
My son is going to see a Pediatric Arthritis Specialist on Monday. We were to the Dr again after the chriopracter couldn't do anything. We will hopefully find some answers. We have a start anyway.
Tonight I was to have bible study but she postponed it until next week. Our books did not come in. I was a tad sad as I am ready to get back at it. Peggy I did enjoy Beth's devotion on prayer. I am doing At the Feet of Jesus by Joanna Weaver. See I told you my brain was frozen yesterday.
Judy that tea sound delightful. I will have to look into Republic Tea.
Bunny so glad to see you. Good luck on your classes. Glad your son made it to camp. Keeping him in our prayers.
well ladies I am off to read a bit and go to bed. This madame butterfly has tired wings. love to you all Tammy

Becky, I'm taking classes for an AAS in administrative assistant ( basically I see it as secretarial school). I'm taking intermediate word and excel, basic Microsoft office ( so easy it hurts..but lots of busy work). And file management. I really don't need the Microsoft office class but it is a requirement for the degree. Last quarter I took my business English class with all the grammar and punctuation. Amazingly I got a B in the class. Good luck hanging with the big kids. At 57 years old I just didn't think I had time to go 4 years.
Cherime, I so wish we lived closer. I have a book in my head and I just can't get it out. Every time I try to write something it just doesn't sound right. Someday.....
Tammy, maybe the cold has slowed down your butterflies. Hope they continue to behave for you. At least the holidays are over.
Judy, I sympathize on the wind issue. When I lived in the mountains, I use to sleep with my clothes on and a bugout bag by the bed just in case. The trees were so tall and I always worried one would fall on the house.
Until later.....

Good Evening Girls...
Cherime... you new book sounds like a good one. A little diversion for you, huh? Hope you are soon well and feeling back to normal.
Alicia...We are looking forward to your tea. Sounds like you are trying to make it more than it needs to be. We only expect tea. LOL
Becky...I can't wait to see how the real photographer did on the pictures of the Wedding. The Hilton was kind of dark inside and then with the darkness outside coming through the windows...you really needed more than a camera phone to get anything decent. Hope she got some good shots. She takes pictures for The Portland Trailblazer's Basketball Team...so, she should be good at what she does.
Wow...both you and hubby going to school...that sounds hard. I really admire when people strive to better their job capability or job security. You Go Girl!
Judy...you sound like you are a light sleeper. I hate when every little noise wakes you up. Especially noise outside...like wind that sounds like it is going to blow your trees down or house away. Thanks for the tip on ordering a tea catalog. (+:
Teacher Tammy...glad you were able to go to work today and that the butterflies were good. Hope that lasts and that they have missed school so much they are going to be good for teacher Tammy now. A fresh new lease on life. LOL
Bunny....maybe you and Cherime should do a book colaberation. Have your new classes started yet?
Well, tomorrow we have to have some one come out and look at the mold growing in one of my kitchen cabinets. They think it is a leak from the foundation of the Apartment and I might get all new kitchen cabinets out of it. But it won't be fun having my kitchen torn up for a week or so. We won't know for sure until the inspector comes out tomorrow.
Which one of you said that you had read the Orchardist before??? It is a good book, and yet it is extremely sad too. Hope it has a good ending though. I hate bad endings.
Well, more later girls.
Hugs, Peggy

Tammy, How neat! I lived in Jamestown for 3 months in 1970, It is a pretty place but very humid in the spring. I enjoyed it there. Has it grown much. I guess you are pretty cold there right now,,,brr. Our weather here has been cool for us but not freezing. A tiny bit of rain here and there but that is all for now.
hugs darlene

We're having a heat wave (doing a happy dance)!!! It's above 0!!! :) I never thought the single digits would be referred to as warming up! It has been a stressful few days here on the farm. Like Judy - I worried so much about he cows that I couldn't sleep through the wind either. I spent most of the night praying that the cows would be alright. We have a barn for all of them, but unfortunately the feed bunk and automatic waterer is outside. We set a bunch of round bales out in various places to help block the wind. God is so good - we only have one cow that has a tic of frostbite on 2 of her teats. Everyone else (including the cats) are just fine. We actually got very lucky because Sunday it was a beautiful day - overcast with no wind in the morning - so we got all the manure hauled out. It started snowing about 10am - the huge fluffy flakes that are so pretty. Then around 4 it rained for an hour or so. It was really neat to see when it was raining and snowing at the same time! Then the temperature dropped and the slush on top of the snow froze as it continued to snow. When the bad winds were blowing Monday 2/3 of the snow was held in place by the ice so not so much was blowing around. Schools around here are still closed due to the ice. I bet they'll be delayed in the morning as it's snowing again. It's supposed to be raining and 48 on Saturday. I don't know what the rest of the winter is going to be like, but so far it's crazy!! If the past few days are what Alaska is normally like I will definitely not be moving there to milk cows!!! I'm just so glad we don't have any calves born in the winter any more. The older ones handle the cold much better.
I did take some pictures, but I'll post them another time I'm exhausted. I'm going to have a cup of tea and maybe read for a bit before I fall asleep. Glad to hear everyone stayed warm and trouble free through the arctic blast.

Bunny I have 4 classes that require a lot of writing and grammar and punctuation are my weaknesses at the moment. Wish I had your classes now. I am 57 also and I just have to complete what I have started. I figured it out that if I take 4 classes each semester and even in the summer I shall graduate with a MA in 3 years. That is if I survive this semester. LOL. Hubby is having his growing pains as well with math. So this house is stressed with homework. Good luck in your classes. Becky

We're having a heatwave here too! It was 25' when I got off work tonight and Judy I thought the same thing "Bikini weather" LOL (as if I'd ever wear one). It was wonderful, just wish I could have enjoyed it more. We're supposed to have above 0' temps through Tuesday and then it's forecasted to plunge back into arctic temps again :O( M* made it home before I did and let the dogs out and he told me Oreo was so excited over how warm it was she actually ran through a snow drift lol The poor thing hasn't been happy at all with these frigid temps we've been having.
We went shopping after work and I finally found a pair of Carhartt bibs that fit me. We couldn't find any 28's last year for length and 30's were like 2' to long. M* had gotten a $35 gift certificate to our local mall, such that it is, and recently Home of Economy moved into the mall so we were able to use the certificate :O) Those puppies aren't cheap to say the least but I'm sure it will last forever.
Darlene - that's funny because we constantly comment on the low humidity lol. We moved here from Michigan which has unbelievable humidity so Jamestown has been wonderful for us. Yes the area is growing. Valley City has two large plants moving in this year with lots of new jobs so their expecting a large increase in growth. We may be getting a Menard's to! I could do cartwheels over it I'm so excited.
I finished two books so far this week. I completed Pride and Prejudice. I love Austin movies but have never read the books so it's my goal this year. I also completed The Reichenbech Problem. I saw a review on PaperBackBookExchange and ordered it. It was a bit dry although the end did pick up a bit but I doubt I'd recommend it. I started Sarah Palin's America by Heart today. I also plan on starting The Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle.

Hi My Porchies...
Well, I just finished reading The Orchardist tonight. It was good. Very poetic writing style. It was very true to life so very gritty and raw in parts but very picturesque and poetic in parts. Emotional highs and lows and even oppressive under-currents to the story. It reminded me a lot of Cold Mountain...if I had to compare it to another Novel.
Guess what girls? I am getting a brand new kitchen in my apartment. We had a black mold issue in one of our lower cabinets and I had the maintenance guy look at it...and it was creeping up one wall too. So, they have to come in an tear out the main kitchen wall to find the source of the water leak (I think it is from the foundation) but anyway that means ripping out the sink and all the cabinets on that wall...so they are going to update the entire kitchen...since these are older kitchens. Wow!!! I am thrilled! We will be without a kitchen for a week and it won't be pleasant with all the noise and racket going on but the end result will be worth it. We will need to spend one night in a motel because when they spray all the paint and stuff neither DH nor I can handle those intense fumes.
Connie...love the seed magazines. I especially love the one with the bike on it. I use to order all of those magazines but now that I just do a postage stamp size garden...I don't order them any more. But they are always fun to look at and the main picture is always so beautiful. ~ I finally got a Card out to Malissa. I didn't make a home-made one though...just haven't had the time.
PG Tammie...speaking about Carhartt Bibs, my little grandsons other Grandpa bought him a Babies Carhartt Jacket for Christmas. I didn't even know they made toddler size anything. It is so stinking cute...but I am sure it cost a pretty penny too. LOL ~ You my girl read quite a diverse genre of books. Good for you! Have you read Pride and Prejudice and The Zombies? I thought that was so funny!!! But you have to have read the real book first to find the humor in the zombie one.
Alicia...I looked at your Blog too. If that is the piece of property you are meant to have...it will happen. I wish I was better at keeping up my blog site. I'm terrible at it.
Judy...you must have been busy today girl...you had very little to say when you came to The Porch. Nothing to make us giggle.
Well...it's midnight and I'm tired. First night back at Bible Study. Was good to be back but I'm pooped. The rain isn't helping either always makes me extra fatigued.

Peggy, you will love your new kitchen. This last summer I painted my house and it was upside down for about 2 1/2 months. But now I can sit back and enjoy the results. Good luck in dealing with the noise. Just keep telling yourself that it is only for a small amount of time. Hugs Becky

Good morning ladies!
We went to the PA State Farm Show yesterday in Harrisburg, which is huge. We left at 6:00 a.m. yesterday a.m. and got home at 1:30 a.m. this morning. Needless to say, I'm at work but my eyelids are drooping! We had a wonderful time, though. Got to see a ton of exhibits and animals, plus a rodeo last night. It was my first time seeing a rodeo other than on TV. It was fun. Better get back to work!
Hugs, Luanne

Here's a few of the pictures I promised: Big fluffy flakes falling:
Love the snow on the pinetrees:
Carey wanted her picture taken too!
Everyone grab a cup - this should warm you back up :)
This morning it was sprinkling and everything is starting to melt. The snow plows came through to try and clean the roads off. We live at the end of the township so we have 2 townships that use our driveway to turn around in. Not usually a problem, but take a look at this!!
The first snowplow to come by seems to have forgotten where our driveway is and tried to turn around in the yard! Needless to say he made a big deep muddy hole in the yard and got stuck. The second truck just happened to come by about 15 minutes later and pulled him out. My husband was out trying to figure out the best way to get him out when the second truck came by. It worked out great. I'm not sure our tractor would have worked so well on the slippery road.
Anyway, Peggy! I'm excited for you. A new kitchen will be wonderful!! Do you get to pick any of it out - like the paint color?
Alicia - Best of luck to you on getting your property. We've been looking for a new farm for a few years now and we definitely missed out on the best one for us - not our fault, but we still compare everything to it. I know exactly how you feel!!
PGTammy - you'll love those bibs. I finally broke down and got me a pair of coveralls last year. I just couldn't seem to let go of my ripped up bibs with the price of new ones, but the coveralls are much warmer and they do last a long time. Question for you - when you can beans to you soak and cook them first? I've never canned beans, but you're right - a bag of dried beans is much cheaper than the cans!! Also I had to chuckle when you commented about not having wood for a fireplace (or woodstove in my case). We found a farm in ND we wanted to go take a look at. When my husband showed it to his dad the first thing he said was "You can move to ND! There's no trees up there!" I'm not sure why he thought we needed trees to milk cows.
Judy - I think we should unpack the shorts! We might be able to go for a swim tomorrow ;)
Connie - Don't you just love getting seed books in the mail! I can't wait to have a HUGE garden. We just had some peaches I canned yesterday.
Becky - hope school is going well for you. I'm sending some snow your way before it's all gone. Not sure if it'll make it there though LOL!!
Luanne - I bet that farm show was great! Grab an extra cup of coffee and maybe a chocolate bar to help you through the day :)
Well, I need to wash some clothes and get back to re-organizing my desk. It became the place to stash everything for making gifts during Christmas. Have a great rest of the day everyone :)
