I have had mild varicose veins for a while, but this summer during a uterine biopsy, I managed to strain and pop a really good one on my leg. This one hurts if I stand too long and it can really stick out.
I have had an ultrasound and there is no clot. When I first got it I used preparation H wipes to get it down. Any other ideas? It doesnt seem to be able to go away. I have a pair of compression hose and a pair of compression knee highs, but will I be stuck in these for all my days?
I have also been drinking cherry juice.
Any other ideas? |

Short of vein stripping, which I understand isn't pleasant at all, you may have to wear the stockings.
I know walnut salves are supposed to help with varicose and spider veins, but it's so expensive.
I bought a foam wedge that I'll prop my legs on each night while reading in bed. It helps make tired legs feel a little better.
My mom has bad varicose veins too. I have a cluster of spider veins behind one knee and will also be destined for the varicose ones too if I;m not careful.
Do yer wear comfey shoes with cush and support?
Also discovered that Birkenstocks can be made with a softer footbed. It's a little more expensive, but way comfey especially if you will be standing in one palce for a long time. |

Birkenstocks are the only shoe I wear. The softer footbeds are like walking on a dream!
Mine werent bad until the biopsy. I was painful and straining in the stirrup popped this one out. The knee highs are helping and I prop up my legs. I just wondered if anything had a lasting effect. I guess I have to get used to wearing hose everyday forever. Not fun in the 80 degree weather.
I have never heard of walnut salves. I may check that out. Depends on how expensive before I would buy it.

I feel your pain!
My mom got hers by way of water weight gain with my sister who was born Downes. Water weight was very sudden and put a lot of strain on her legs too.
She is a nurse too, so she introduced me to the Leegs sheer energy support pantyhose many years ago. They do feel beter, but not on hot days.
The salve is black walnut I think. Yes, do the research and I hope you find some relief!
OH! And I also made a small investment and bought a pair of the Birkenstock shoe inserts. I wear these in rubber boots when I have to clean barns and stand on concrete for a few hours.
It makes a difference too.

I may try the Leggs. I have been wearing tights and compression socka and hose. I actually started with the Birk inserts when I broke my foot the first time and got plantar fascitis. They make a lot of difference.

After wearing the inserts, I have noticed that my legs and especially foot arches feel LOTS better

| I am having some reliefe wearing the compression socks. I guess I have to get used to wearing them everyday for the rest of my life, but why on earth isnt anyone making some of these that are cute or stylish or just maybe pink! There is a huge hole in the market! |

This just in!
My mom is having out patient surgery on her varicose veins today.
She has 2 saphenous veins that have blown valves and could indeed risk throwing a clot in the future.
This won't be a vein stripping procedure, it will actually invilve a small incision, a catheter and a lazer that will seal off the veins. Apparently the blood flow will be rerouted. She'll have to wear very heavy duty compression stocking for 48 hours, then can resume her normal activities!
The dr said her spider veins may disappear too
My legs aren't in as bad a shape. But if you suspect you have blown valves and you have those ropey purple bulges...might want to ask about this procedure.
Mom will call tonight with results, so I'll be sure to jump back on with any kind of interesting updates |

I do have one ropey vein since June. The socks are helping, but you know how fun they are to wear.
I hope her surgery goes well. I cant wait to hear how hers goes! Prayers for your mom! |

Thanks a bunch!
Talked to Mom last night and all went well.
They injected a local anesthetic (novicane) where the catheter went in. Mom said the needle was smaller than the kind they use for blood donating, so for her there wasn't much of a bad sting either.
She had been instructed to take a Valium 2 hours before the surgery and 1 when she got to the hospital. Just a calming sedative kind of thing, so I'm not sure how much of this if any blocked the pain.
Dr said she would feel pressure from w/in so no trouble there either.
She has to take 800mg of ibuprofen for a few days too but that's about it
They did one leg this time and will do the other in a few weeks. And of course she will wear a heavy comptession stocking and can take this off tomorrow.
Today is her birthday so we'll see her tonight and I can ask and actually see the results. |

So mom is fine and she was able to get around ok.
Still needed to keep her leg propped up so she rested this on the back seat of the mini van when we drove around, and on my dad's leg inside the restaurant.
There were several sites where the drs inserted needles/catheters...but again, no problem and very, very minimal pain.
To order the copmression stockings she needed a dr.s prescription. Only glitch here was she opted to get the toe-in kind and had to take it off one night and modify it a little when she woke up and her toes were all squnched and compressed too!
Other than that, no problems!
So I hope you find a good solution and can perhaps keep this type of procedure in mind if the dr. sees it's fit for your case someday!
