I have a few and they are just so much fun!!! I moved upnorth about 3 years ago and someone suggested I get a few chickens. They said I would like them and I thought then, WHAT, me like chickens!!! But I have to say they are fun and I call them my girls and some free feed and some do not and they just make me smile!!!

Join the club Beverley! Love love love my girls!!!! They're so much fun to watch as they cluck to each other and chatter while they're "hunting" bugs in the yard. They keep me smiling.

I absolutely love my girls! I fel sorry for people who don't understand. One of my favorite things is listening to them settle in for the night. They kinda coo and cluck goodnight to each other, like the Waltons. Love it!

how sweet it is to love some one, how right it is to care

I totally understand! I love watching my girls chase after bugs in the field! Sometimes I'll even set up a lawn chair and just watch them scratch around. Earlier this summer, my sons forgot to lock the girls in the coop for the night. In the wee hours of the morning, we woke to alot of commotion in the henhouse. A coyote had determined that the coop was his own personal "all-you-can-eat" buffet line! My hubby grabbed his shotgun and his rubber boots (not much of anything else!) and raced up to protect our flock while I stumbled around looking for more "appropriate" attire. The coyote took off, and we searched for our chickens. Out of 17 chickens and 1 rooster, only the rooster was to be found. I was heartbroken. As soon as the feed stores opened, I started calling around looking for more chicks. I got the last 7 babies in our area! I ran into town and picked up the chicks, brought them home, & took them up to the coop. One side of our coop is set up for chicks, seperated from the others (& safer!). Imagine my surprise when I opened the door and found ALL of my girls, safe and sound! So now, we have 24 hens and 1 VERY happy rooster!

Oh kimberly you must have a happy rooster!!! hehehehe I am glad that darn coyote didn't get your chickens. we have lost a few to a racoon earlier this year and now am having problems again. so I took all the free feeders and put them in the coop. I want them safe. we still are trying to catch whatever it is this time. we almost caught it the other night but it wiggled out of the trap somehow. It was squealing like a little piggy whatever it was and the trap was moved about a yard from where we had it and it was sprung . My hubby went running out there too but whatever it was was running away by that time and my hubby didn't get a good look at it. so we will try again. But at least it won't be my girls getting taken this time. I just love the way chickens run!!! Way too cute!!! hehehehehee

Beverely, we have been teasing our 17 year old son about learning to strut like our rooster! Yes, "Frisky Biscuit" is one happy guy! We had raccoon problems in the spring. We even named the momma coon (since she is a repeat customer) "Lucy-fur". She is missing half of her snout (don't know why, but I'm SURE she has somethin' bad!). She brings her babies...this year there were 3. Were. Hopefully, she took the hint! Good luck with catching whatever it is!

Don't feel strange, there are lots of us who adore our chickens!

They provide great comic relief and are just plain amusing to watch.

It's nice when there are a few that seek out human attention and like to be picked up and loved on

Amen! I absolutely love my chickies! I'm like Kimberly -- I have a lawn chair in the storage side of my coop, so after I feed them, I can just sit and watch. And I love it when Prissy comes over and wants to sit in my lap to eat (she's the one that always gets picked on by the others) and how Rudy will come over and become territorial about me (he thinks I belong to him!). I can have a really bad day, even be in tears over something, and I'll go out there and play with my chickies, and suddenly, all is right with the world again! I work for counselors, and I've often told them they need to tell their clients to get chickens -- it'll cure anything emotional that ails them!

I miss the sound of happy chickens on a cold morning. I don't know if I just enjoyed them more then, but those were the kind of mornings they seems to have the most to say.

Brandee, keep us posted on how your hatching goes! We've been thinking about trying that, but I think I would be heartbroken if the hatch was less than perfect!
