San Francisco is quickly becoming a model for revolutionizing the impact a big city brings to the environment.

First they ban plastic bags, and now they are mandating that food scraps be composted! Check out this awesome article!

Isn't that amazing! And they are working towards no garbage by 2020! I want MY town to do this!!

Hooray for San Francisco! I wish plastic bags were banned everywhere. they are a problem even in countries like China and India. My town is behind the times when it comes to garbage--they charge the same for everyone, no matter how much (or how little) garbage you set out. Sometimes I don;t even have enough to set a bag out, but I still get charged.

Our city runs on a dumpster system so I get charged the same fee each month. I would love it if we were required to recycle and compost!!

Our town charges us a flat rate for our weekly garbage pick up. Sometimes we only put out the can once a month. We make so little garbage. We compost our scraps, recycle what we can, and buy mostly items with very little packaging. I think it would be more fair to charge by the can, but it is what it is and fortunately the charge is very little - only about 9.00 per month.

Yea, it bothers me when the almighty plastic bag is EVERYWHERE!!

I have gotten way better at carrying my own bags. You can cram way more into them anyway.

I just wish the checkers would can the attitude though. I know it takes longer but so what. Where do they have to be in such a hurry!?!?

Read an article in our local paper about how plastic bottles will have to be removed before trash goes into a landfill. I just wish folks around here took glass again. So many do not b/c the cost to melt it back down outweighs the benifit.

And I think plastic bags have been banned in S. Africa too?

I was surprised to hear from my niece that my hometown has started doing the Materials Recovery. They open each bag of garbage, sort it and then and only then do they put things in the landfill. That really makes me proud! I can't imagine hiring on for that job- but I am glad people are doing it!
