I was driving across my home state tonight and enjoying beautiful scenery and some of the most amazing sunsets (In Wyoming you get multiple sunsets if you are driving because the weather patterns can change so fast!) and the book I was listening to had a quote in it that really made me mentally stop and think.
"Do not seek death, for it will seek you out. Seek the road that makes death a fullfillment."
Wow. That quote really touched home with me. Not that I seek death or anything, but it is true. We will all eventually find our lives coming to a close in one manner or another. But we can choose how we live.
Sometimes I feel like I coast through life waiting for the next thing to happen. Waiting for Spring, for Summer, for Fall, for Winter. Waiting for the next school semester, waiting fo the semester to end. Waiting for graduation, waiting for a career. Waiting for potty training.
Or time is wasted looking back and saying "I wish I had done this, that or the other."
But this year I have been looking for those little opportunities that really make life a joy. Nora is amazing and she give me so much joy day to day. This year even though it is hard for our family, I fulfilled my dream of owning my horse.
I guess it is another way of dayin Carpe Diem. Sieze the Day. Live life to the fullest so when that inevitable day comes the fullness of your life has been fullfilled.
Just thought I would share! Anyone else squeezing life for all it's worth? :D

Alee- after all the craziness of the past 6 months, I am learning to cherish each day and moment and realize it's not all about the end result. Illness will do that to a person. Thanks for sharing.

Heather, I totally agree. This year has been very trying. But the one thing I did learn was, slow done. I guess that God did what he did to make me see that. When He makes things happen to you to make you slow down and LOOK at what is going on around you cant help to do it. Now that I have slowed down, wonderful things have happend. My husband got a part time job (which is the only thing he can do) And I have more time to spend with my husband and to do the things I love to do (bake, sew, read). Everyday is a wonderful thing that God has allowed us to have. Alee thank you for your encouragement to slow down and not wish for the days, weeks, months to hurry up and end.

Alee, what a beautiful post. You KNOW I have been keeping these thoughts very close! His Holiness the Dalai Lama says, "Death is the ultimate inevitable. It is wise to keep it close."
I actually like the idea of seeking death but only in the form of a metaphor. There are a million little ways we can do this. We can watch those aspects of ourselves that are no longer useful die away. We can kill off nasty little things like judgment and self-loathing. We can die to old patterns of living and take hold of new ones. Death and birth are a constant in our lives if only we have the eyes to see and look deeply.
In terms of a true physical death..Aria's cancer has certainly brought me very close to the edge. I'm speaking conceptually not literally. I'm a completely different person in many respects. It seems to me that although her illness has brought the concept to the forefront, it is one we'd all do well taking time to consider. I think we'd enjoy life more. I think precious moments would increase. I think the words "live simply" would resonate not in anything we do but in how we are. I think we'd have less room for tolerance, hatred and fear and a whole lot more room for patience, acceptance and joy. I think we'd gain a better sense of compassion and decency.
A friend of mine sent me this quote that I find very comforting as I consider people whose time has come and they must step over the edge as I stand behind still firmly upon terra firma:
"When you have come to the edge of all the light you know, and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith means two things....
There will be something to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly. You will be led."

So yes, we are all close to the edge..right there in fact. We may think some are farther from the edge than others but to my mind that distance may be only a step or two. We're all right there. It is wise to live live live...share your dreams and wishes OUT LOUD and take notice...

I always say you can only take one thing with you when you die and that's your name...So make it a good one.....
You are right enjoy yourself, make those around you enjoy themselves in your company. Enjoy the life our Lord has given you. My DH and I go to watch the sun set sometimes and it's wonderful.

I love Alees & Julias commentary! All too true-I have spent a few scattered past years waiting for this,that,& the other. Sarah Ban Breathnach really helped me snap out of it for the most part. (I have most of her books) I've been seeking to make the rest of my life fulfilling,adventurous,enjoyable,and memorable as I can. Dr Wayne Dyer is also a great author for living in the moment. Amazing how hard that can be! I've wasted time in my past going over the past-wishing this or that could've been different,& so forth. Again,my present task is to be not only to be in the present,but to make the now as enjoyable & rewarding as I can. There are moments when I start to drift-but I catch it before it goes into days & weeks. You have to be open to the goodness of the Universe to receive it.

Ahh, love to hear things like that. That is what makes life so meaningful; just to see a squirrel run past with a chestnut in its mouth, or walking by someones house and you know that they are canning chili sauce just to name a couple!

Alee and Julia thank you for such thoughtful posts. One of the bonuses of belonging to this site is that there are so many wonderful women here who truly make me want to be more. To think more.
