My asparagus bed is now 3 years old and I'm suppose to begin harvesting it but don't have a clue what to do. It looks like fern plants I would have in the house. Not really any spears that look like they would be edible. Do I cut them all back come winter? Do I continue to leave them alone? What should I be doing?

Asparagus is generally harvested in the spring months, up to about the 1st of July. Then any new spears are left to grow into the ferns you describe to help build up the roots for the following year.
You can cut back any ferns now, slightly below ground level. Add a good amount of manure or compost to your bed for the winter and early next spring you should be rewarded with spears!
