I am across the border in PA. You can plant kales, pac choi, assorted cold weather greens and lettuces plus cabbage, cauliflower, etc. Problem is that these things need to be planted in August around here for proper germination before frost. You may be able to get some greens with a short maturation time in right now if your lucky. If you want to put in a cold frame you could extend the season a little longer for some things. Some greens taste even better after the frost. The problem with things like carrots and beets is that they love cool weather, but it is actually the shorter days that keep them from forming properly. A really good company is www.johnnyseeds.com , they rate which veg do best in cold weather. Don't forget garlic goes in the ground October 12. Good luck

Like someone jaut said, best time was to plant in August. We do collards and purple top turnips. turnip greens are really good, as are the turnips either raw in a salad or coarsly diced in large chunks and boiled w/ a little salt.

I'm an Ohio girl too (Cincinnati) but now call the South home.

We also order from Johnny's Select and have had great success with their stuff

Sara,
I am in Missouri and we planted Spinach, and Lettuce recently. Spinach a week and a half ago and Lettuce a about three weeks ago. These are in our hoop houses, that have not yet been covered with plastic. And they are growing great. Plus I started baby romaine inside and transplanted them a couple of weeks ago and they are all doing great. Most lettuce will grow well in the colder weather, and bloomsdale spinach will grow in the fall and you can pick it, and then let it over winter into Spring. I grow the romaine in cold frames, covered with row cover to protect them from heavy rain, and in the colder weather they will be covered with plastic. I love the cold frames through winter, because they stay warm enough to keep things from freezing. It is easy to make a simple one. And then have salad greens all winter. We also use some cattle mineral tubs, that have been emptied and filled with dirt. We make a simple arch with pvc pipe and even use some large sticks to make arches to fit the tub, and cover them with plastic and they too grow all winter like a miniature green house. The tubs are up against a privacy fence which helps protect them on one side. It is so much fun to go out to the cold frame in the winter, and lift up the plastic to see baby romaine growing like crazy.
Happy Fall Growing.

Just to keep the garden going over the winter, I like to bring in some of my herbs in pots and see how long I can keep them on a sunny windowsill... Not really a crop but it makes me feel better to see green things growing.
