I ordered vinal shades for my 4 big kitchen windows. I have never had shades on those windows and the cirtains are just valances. The windows are on the north side of the house so the sun never shines in but lets in a lot of light. Oh how I hate to cover those windows, But...........I'm sure a lot of cold draft comes in around them. So this year, I'll pull the blinds when the wind is in the north.

Other than that, canning and freezing everything I can get my hands on. Waiting on the 'boys' to come cut wood. Both sons and 2 grandsons have fireplaces so with a little luck, I'll get some wood if I let them use the new log splitter.

Canning, freezing, drying everything. Stuffing bits of insulation and caulking into every crevice I see or feel a draft through. I made flannel curtains for the windows and a draft dodger thingie for the front door by sewing 2 of those swimming noodles into fabric so that one is on each side of the door and moves with the door. I made storm windows for the old single pane windows in my bedroom and kitchen. I also filled my spare propane tanks for the grill in case we lose power for a long time. Firewood is covered, too.

I am going to be buying new tires for our car, installing insulated draperies on ALL windows, putting white foam board in all of our windows, making door snakes, and knitting wool slippers! We also will keep our pantry WELL stocked!

You are all doing what I would have said. I stay stocked just because, and if we get the snow we had last december and then again in january, I will be more than prepared. I worry more because of the economy than bad weather thou.

I need to buy all weather tires. Make sure my cold medicine (all medicine) is updated. Thats it. I'm sure I have everything else. Lot's of candles, blankets, food, ect. I live in the village with wonderful neighbors. The one neighbor is moving to Thiland for the winter and she is the one with the wood fireplace.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

Yes, Sweetie, I saw a commercial some time ago that was trying to sell them for $19.95! I figured I could just make them myself and planned on buying a piece of pipe insulation, but when I found those swimming noodles at Nelson's for a quarter, I figured they would work!

Yep, Alee, I have a call in to the local tire guy to look for some good used snow tires for me.

Lisa, I'm so glad you still enjoy that apron! I haven't made any in so long. All summer, actually. I think I might get back to them sometime this winter...when I need a break from the kitchen/bathroom remodel. lol

Lisa- see if you can get some of those "space" blankets and sew them into your curtains. They make excellent "thermal" windows and if you get some of that sticky velcro you can velcro the curtains around the window frame and viola! You have a much more insulated window! You can also hang blankets or quilts from the ceiling to lower the effective ceiling height to keep more heat down where we can feel it.

I never thought about those space blankets as a thermal liner. What a great idea; as is the velcro, too! I have ceiling fans to keep the heat down where I need it. Which is a good thing since I've been taking out the lowered ceilings to get back to the original high ceilings!

Hey, Mom? ._. Do you think you could do the same thing to my room so I don't wake up to 50 degrees when I'm home for winter vacation? xD

I have the windows on my little ones room lined with polar fleece year round. There is a Montessori school next door and it keeps the sound down and keeps the room a better temp. We probably need to look at the windows to see if we have any failing caulking.

We have a lot of stained glass and we use a clear caulking to keep any openeings from letting air in. We plan to eventually put another ane of glass over them for protection but tey are really long and I think the glass will have to be ordered.
