I just had to share my treasure hunting story with someone and knew you guys would understand. My mother is 78 and recently has been giving things, to her children and grandkids, that they might want. She and my dad moved from Houston to a small town in East TX, when they retired, to be closer to the kids. So many things are still packed away. I have been helping her sort through her things and getting them ready for her to give to whomever. This week we tackled a storage shed out back. Mom has always done a lot of needle crafts and was looking for some embroidried hand towels she had done many years ago for one of my sisters. Never found the towels but did find a box that had 18 12X12 hand embroidry roses and 20 12x12 hand appliqued little farmgirl quilt squares from my grandmother. My grandmother was on dialysis for many years before she died (at age 87) and would work on her quilt squares while she got her treatments. That was more than 20 years ago and treatments would take 7-8 hours and she went 4 times a week. I remember sitting many of those hours with my grandmother when I was a child, her stitching away and me watching all the nurses doing nursing things. That was when I decided I wanted to be a nurse. I am so excited! The main reason this is exciting to me is that there were 4 sisters with my mom and there was strong rivalry amongst them. After my grandmother died one of the sisters went into the home and took every last piece granny made. All the quilts, pillow cases, towels, hankies... everything. The other 3 sisters did not get a thing. My mom thought the squares had also been taken and does not remember how she got the box. So guess what I'm gonna be doing this winter? I feel a quilt making time coming on. Just needed a sharing moment. Thanks for listening.

Victoria That's so great! It never fails to amaze me how selfish family can be sometimes, didn't that sister think for one moment that the rest of the family would want some treasured memories!!?? Grr..sounds like my family...lol But I'm so happy that you got a a piece of your gram's history that you can pass on. Great find <3 Lots of Hugs

Victoria...how wonderful for you! What an inspirational/thoughtful gift! Isn't it amazing how greedy folks get? And how stuff just disappears, not because it will be cherished, loved, displayed, and cared for....but because someone feels like it's "owed" to them. Please post pics of your work...and your granny's! |

Cindy that is such a sweet saying I have not heard that before. But how true. My mom is giving things now because she does not want the same thing happening with her kids. My sisters and me are all very close but you never know what death brings out in people. In my line of work, I'v seen many wonderful people turn into selfish mean beings in the face of a parent's death.

Wow, Victoria, you really did find a treasure. And, how sweet that you mother is giving them to you. You really do have the family jewels.

What a treasure you've been given. I do hope you will post a photo when you are finished.

I promise I will post a photo when I finish. It will probably be around next spring. I won't be able to get started until after the fall harvest and probably after the weather gets to nasty to be outside (sometime in December).

That is so wonderful Victoria! I know that the quilt you make will be a legacy of love to your children someday. Yes, I've seen too what can happen to families. I've even had to quiet family member arguing over family treasures in the room with their loved one not yet gone. It can be very disheartening to see what happens when the devil gets into people over possessions and money.

You are welcome Karen I'm still smiling every time I see my box. Which I have sitting in the middle of my living room right now. My husband said I need to put that away before it gets messed up. I told him I will when I get done looking at it.
