40 years ago was the Woodstock Music Festival and now I'm sitting here watching a local PBS station featuring all things 60's and everything it entailed...the Summer of Love, VietNam, the artists, and of course, Woodstock. Aside from the drugs and general craziness, this time was unique...never to be duplicated again. I was 13 or 14 at the time, and I remember that weekend my parents and I were leaving to go on a week long trip to New England and Canada. That Sunday we left, which was the last day of the festival, the New York Thruway was loaded with people leaving to go home in the opposite direction. It really must have been something to experience! If someone could grant me a wish today, it would be to transport me back 40 years to experience the festival. How about anyone else who was of age at that time? Did anyone go to Woodstock? How was the experience?

I was 12 at the time, didn't even know about it till was long over with, but all I've heard and read about, I think I would have loved to experienced being there. Woodstock was defeniatly a once in a life time wonder.

I was 20 and living in New England (Connecticut)at the time. There were rock festivals on many week-ends all over that area, especially after Woodstock. I went to one of those, in Massachusetts, and the trip was even in a mini VW van. It was interesting! We slid down a hill in the dark to get there. I did not do drugs, and I saw some amazing sights. One guy walked up to us and asked if we had acid, and he was nude (!), but wearing a big peace sign plastic button on his lower hip. I wanted so bad to see how it was attached to his skin, but I could not look! :) Anyway, they sound romantic in retrospect, but rock festivals were just young kids acting wild. The music was legendary, though!

I was 12 back then and lived in the midwest so no concert for me but I sure remember seeing it on the news. That brings back lots of memories. Remember when the Vietnam war was on tv every night on the world news and we'd see wounded GI's being helped to a waiting helicopter? Mini skirts and go go boots? Big flower power pins and necklaces, peace sign necklaces, love beads? Rose colored sun glasses that were oval wire rims? We all wanted to wear bell bottom jeans and the music was just incredible. Mostly great memories except for the war. I remember one night in particular when the news was very graphic and my little brother started crying. We asked why and he said he was afraid when he grew up he'd have to go to Vietnam to fight. Thank God that didn't happen. It ended in the Spring of '75 just before I graduated high school.

I was about 12 at that time, but living in the Netherlands I don't remember any of it. Yes later on tv ofcourse but not at that time. The Vietnam war the same. Saw it on tv but didn't really get the impact then. Later I saw about the wounded/killed/trauma's etc.
I DO remember the music!! CCR, Elvis ofcourse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The bell bottom jeans I also remember, the peace signs everywhere, the pink sunglasses, mini skirts and much more.
To me it was a wonderful time, everything was still so innocent here.Girls playing with dolls, boys with play guns, lol.
In Amsterdam it was a different story, not as innocent lol. Drugs, Sit-inns, protests against the war. We lived close to Amsterdam but I don't remember us going there around that time. And IF we went we didn't see the protests, guess they were in a different area. OH I do remember the sit inns on the Dam Square in the center of the town though. Large groups of teens and tweens sitting on that square smoking what I thought were just siggies, lol.
I really WAS an innocent 12 year old :)

That was a fun list, Cheryl. I look at each song listed and can immediately hear them in my head. 1969 was a great summer for me. The hippie movement, when it started in San Francisco in 1967, seemed...well, I wouldn't say innocent...but pure in its ideals. It really drew in a lot of young people that summer and as a consequence, it grew out of control and got a little darker with all the drugs and runaways crashing anywhere. Anyway, although I didn't personally experience it, hearing about it and the climate of the time was very exciting. But...it was also very tumultuous with the war, the protests and assassinations of three very prominent people of the decade.

Well I can top all of you. Brag Brag! Richard was there with a few of his best friends, came home all covered in mud. He had a really good time. The kids love to brag that their Dad was there.

I was 11 at that time. I don't remember hearing much about it then. But I sure was a hippie flower girl in the 70s, though. Still am. I love the music and the bands from that time. They just don't make music like that anymore.

Welp, figgers that I don't remember much about it. I was 13 at the time and heard about it but since I've always been such a cowgirl, it really didn't hit my radar, still doesn't. I liked some of the music, especially Grace Slick, but it just didn't/doesn't resonate with me even now. From the pics I remember, I thought it was a bunch of people jumping around. I do remember a vid of cars burning...I think someone's muffler (?) was too hot and caught the grassland on fire. Anyone remember that? But for me, that's about it. :-)

I was 20 at the time. Our generation had long been preaching make love not war. Boy, did they!! I was married and had a 2 yr. old so I wasn't there. bUt, you know it was something that just happened. No one knew it was going to be so big or so famous. It was pretty cool. They have tried to plan reunion concerts, but they never work, because this was just a natural happening. You can't recreate spontanaiety. I am sure I would of loved it if I had been there. Do you know that there wasn't one arrest for violence? That is pretty amazing when you consider how many people there were. Try that now. Ah, yes peace and love! (ok there was a lot drugs too!) But I was never into that.

Well, I was at Woodstock. It was a blast. Did no drugs never did, but saw alot of bands and having just a wonderful time. One experience that I'll never forget whrn I was 18 years old. My boyfriend and I went up to Woodstock in his V.W. red bug. At the time I lived in South Salem, New York. It was a time of love and peace not war. I remember so well. It was a good time.

I never went but my brother Bob went to woodstock & VietNam. He made it home both times. My girlfriend's sister went to woodstock. and still lives there. In Bethal N.Y.
My kids will tell people I was a hippie, I thought of myself a mom with good taste for music. I couldn't play anything but loved all the songs Cheryl listed. It was a good time to be a young adult.
