It was a sad day the day before yesterday when I woke up to go feed my horses and found that my fence was broken. I looked around and all the babies were standing. When the fillies came over to me I saw some blood but couldn't find any cuts. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my little colt and he started to walk towards me but he was walking on his ankle. I was actually on the phone with my husband who was in Michigan working when I saw the horrible injury. (Something always happens when my DH is out of town) I called my neighbor who came over to help me and then the vet. I just knew that he was not going to make it out of this. Long story short we had to put him to sleep.
I know that sometimes things like this happens but I still can never get used to losing one of my babies. My heart is so aching right now over it. He was just a baby. I know when my husband gets home I will be a mess all over again. It just seems like I can never get ahead before something tragic like this happens. It makes you think about why am I still in this business. I guess I just don't know what I would do or be without them. Thanks for listening to me, farmgirl sisters. Glad I have you to talk to!

Oh, golly, Jennifer. I am so sorry. That is always so hard.....one time I lost a foal when it was 24 hours old. (Failure of passive transfer.)Though it had not been alive long enough to be very attached, it was still extremely sad, and watching the mare deal with it was heartbreaking. I am so sorry.

Oh that is very sad, Jen! Poor baby! I am sorry that he couldn't make it through, and knowing how well you treat your horses, I am sure he was a little love too. *hugs* I wish I could be there in person to give you a big hug!

Jennifer you keep doing it because it is you. Life would not be worth living if every moment was gleeful and there were no bumps to remind up how fragile life really is and how we should never take it for granted. Last year I lost my coonhound, Nanu, of 12 years. My heart was broken. It felt like my kid had died. For months I was broken. Finally, a few months after she was gone my husband took me to the pound to pick out another pup. I was a little angry at him for thinking she could be replaced. It was pouring rain that day which put me in even a "better" mood. As soon as I walked thru the gate I heard a commotion that you would not believe. I turned to see what it was and instantly I started crying. There jumping on the fence and barking at me like a wild thing was a pup about 4 months old that looked just like Nanu. I swore to myself she would not be a replacement she would be a new turn in my life and that she is. Puddin' has turned out to be the best friend I could ever hope to find. You will not replace your colt but you will find joy down a different road.

Begin each morning with a song in your heart.

I am so sorry for your loss. I just never completely understand why these things have to happen. What an awful thing for you to have to deal with and no husband to lean on. That does always seem to be the way doesn' it? I am sure your other babies will bring you much joy, that will help a lot. But, it is still hard to lose one. Especially like that. Here's to happier days ahead for you.

Thank you all for your wonderful posts! That is why I enjoy being here with you all. You understand and are there for a farmgirl to lean on. Even though he wasn't with me for but a short time it is so easy to get attached. The worst of it all is just a few month agos I had another horse (my yearling) go through some barbwire fence out in the big pasture. She got hurt really bad too but a wonderful friend took her and tried to help her heal. I couldn't as I have really bad back problems. Sad thing is she wasn't able to heal her as we thought and she too had to be put to sleep last week. I was so fortunate not to have had to do that to her and I don't know how i would have been if I had to do that and then deal with the colt. I only pray that things will eventually turn around for our farm
Thanks again for all the replies.

I am so very sorry about your colt. It doesn't take long to become attached to baby animals and once you do anything that happens to them is devestating. (((hugs))) to you.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Oh, goodness, it's taken me all day to be able to answer to your post. I lost a beautiful palomino colt when I was a teenager. When I read your post this morning, I started to cry. My heart has been aching for you all day. Sending you a big hug and wishes for you to come to peace with this. Again, I am so sorry you are going through this.

Jennifer, I am only echoing the others but I too have had this loss. To see all of the potential and possibilities die is just so hard. We had to put little Fancy down because of tetnus. KILLED me! She was one month old. That was in 1991 I still remember the pain for us and her mom.
I will pray for peace of mind.

Did you ever find out what really happened? Wow that is just awful. I bred dachshunds for quite a few years because with all the fun there is always the downside and that is death. it comes with breeding. I am really sorry for your loss. it is really hard. I could not take it any more and just decided it was time to get out of it. I have a few dogs now and I enjoy them so much. I still just love animals...

Hang in there, and gosh, I'm so sorry. Not a thing I can do to make it stop hurting but comiserate. My grandmother was a horse breeder too, and I understand losing a baby is so hard. Losing any one of them is hard. I'm so sorry for the accident. Love on your other gals and let them heal you through this.

We make a difference.
