Where would I look for a "how to" on converting an existing child's dress pattern that has a 7" invisible zipper on the back bodice, to a button closure? I am sure I could figure it out, but why re-invent the wheel?
i really don't know where you would look.. but here are some instructions.
take the zipper out, being careful not to make any holes in the fabric. you will need to add a 1" strip, doubled (you can put interfacing in it also), of fabric to one side (I would sew it into the opening that one side of the zipper was in) . this will be on the inside so you can sew the buttons onto it. Add another 1" strip on the back of the inside on the buttonhole side, this will make the buttonholes sturdy enough so they wont rip. then (just like at the bottom of the zipper on pants), sew both sides together. I would also sew a hook and eye at the top, this will stop any stress on the top button.

wonderful! And since I am starting with a pattern, I'll simply add the necessary fabric amount to the bodice pattern pieces before cutting them out. yipee. thanks for your help :)
