HI Maggie,
I have an entire cookbook of dog and cat treats. I used to make them for my saints, but life happens and now they get store bought. HMMM... I think you might inspire me to make the time to make treats again.
Will find it and get back to you soon. We made peanut butter and carob honey bones.

Hi Maggie :)
Here is my pup's favorite:
Pumpkin Biscotti (for dogs)
1 cup canned pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
1/4-cup honey
1/4-cup water
2 Tablespoons canola oil
1 large egg
1-teaspoon vanilla
4 cups all-purpose flour (I have even used 1/2 wheat & 1/2 white)
1-teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4-teaspoon baking powder
1/4-teaspoon baking soda
1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, honey, water, oil, egg, and vanilla. Stir in flour, cinnamon, baking powder and baking soda until well mixed.
2) In the bowl and using hands (or a Kitchen-aid) knead lightly until dough holds together. Transfer to a lightly floured surface. Divide dough into four equal pieces. Shape each piece into a log. Flatten the logs to about 2-3 inches wide. With a fork, poke holes all over the surface of the logs. Place about 2 inches apart on baking sheet. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until firm. Place pan on a rack and let cool for 30 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 300 degrees.
3) With a sharp knife, cut each log crosswise into 1/4 inch thick slices. Place cut side down, about 1/2 inch apart on baking sheets. Bake for 30 minutes longer, or until completely hard. Transfer cookies to a rack and let cool completely. Store in a tightly sealed container for up to 30 days.

Here's mine.
2 c ww flour
2 c white flour
3/4 c cornmeal
4 Tblsp vegetable oil
-combine well then add:
2 c boiling water
4 boulion cubes
Form to make a dough. Roll out on floured surface. Cut with cookie cutters.
Bake 300 degress for 30"
That is the recipe...now I add wheat germ, a bit of brewer's yeast, a touch of fennel and garlic, and a bit of dry milk too. I adjust the water accordingly.
I used to make them all the time but the local center based school (for severely handicapped kids) has a business that sells a bag for 3$. I buy my cookies from them these days when I'm over that way. The dogs LOVE them and it helps support the kids' business.

Pumpkin Biscotti sounds like something the puppy and I could share. I'll be watching for the peanutbutter carob honey bones recipe too. The regular doggie bones sound like something Annie might like, will have so find some small cookie cutters for those.

I have a recipe for Yogurt PupPops
32 oz carton plain or vanilla yogurt
1 or 2 ripe bananas (or 1/2 pound frozen cherries or blueberries)
2 Tab peanut butter
2 Tab honey (optional)
1 tea cinnamon
1 tea pure vanilla extract (otional)
Mash bananas, then mix in the remaining ingredients.
Spoon mixture into ice trays and freeze.
Yield: 4 cups/4 trays
(I put in the honey and the vanilla)
LeaLou loves this, I give her two every day when I get home from work.

This recipe came from the Humane Society that was printed in the newspaper:
DOG BISCUITS
1 1/2 cups wheat flour
3/4 cup non fat dry milk powder
1/2 cup quick oats
1/4 cup cornmeal
2 tsp. parsley flakes
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/3 cup shortening
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 Tbsp. instant chicken or beef boullion granules
1 cup hot water
Combine flour, milk powder,oats, cornmeal,parsley and garlic powder in medium bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in egg. Stir instant granules into hot water until dissolved. Slowly pour into the flour mixture, stirring with a fork to moisten. form dough into a ball and knead on floured board five minutes or until smooth and elastic. Make cutouts with cookie cutter, or make nuggets by rolling dough into one-inch diameter log: cut off one and one-half inch pieces. Arrange six cut-out shapes or 24 nuggets on 10-inch pie plate. Microwave on 50% power to five to ten minutes, or until firm and dry to the touch. Rotate plate every two minutes and turn shapes over mid way through cooking. Cool on wire rack. Shapes will crisp as they cool. Makes one and one-half dozen cutouts or five and one-half dozen nuggets. May also bake in regular oven at 350 for 45 minutes. Done when just hard.
Make my words soft and tender, for I may have to eat them. :) |

I use a recipe like StarMeadow's but I sub bacon grease for 1 Tbsp. of the oil.

I might have posted this before somewhere but I dehydrate sliced yams (sliced the long way) for my dogs as chew toys. They love them and they are full of fiber and very healthful for your dog. You could probably soak them in stock or something for flavor but I dont. My dogs love em.

Here's an easy one. I make these every other week for my 2 puppers. One has always had a very sensitive stomach and these are all (so far) he's been able to tolerate.
Dog Biscuits
Mix 3/4 cup boiling water with 1 bullion cube- either chicken or beef. Let cool, then add:
1 egg, 1/3 cup oil
garlic powder to taste
Add all at once: 3 cups whole wheat flour
Knead for 3 or 4 minutes. Roll out and cut.
Bake at 350 for 50 minutes. Turn oven to lowest temp, bake another 45 minutes. Turn oven off and let cool in oven.
I sometimes add a baby jar of meat, and baby carrots or sweet potatoes, or a baby stew, and reduce the liquid a bit.
These smell delicious while baking! :)
