I am the world's worst all time thrower. I have no aim at all. I can stand right over a trash basket and miss it. Honestly. I have thrown clods of durt at my chickens to get them out of the garden and never ever hit one. I had a snake slowly amble across the yard and right up the apple tree with me in hot pursuit throwing every thing I could find to throw and NEVER hit it. I maen big rocks that I could hardly pick up. It even stopped several times like it was giving me a chance to hit it, but never did.
So tonight I was out feeding all the chickens and guineas. As usual, Jellyfish, the Dumb White Guinea, was being his ornery bullyish self and chasing all the poor little chickens all over the yard. So I picked up the first thing I found which was a little 2' long 1x2 and tossed it over towards the dumb bird and whacked him right on the noggin. I even heard it go ping. He fell over and sat there a few minutes and tried to get up but wobbled a few times. He sat back down a minute and tried again. Wobbled a little more. 4 of the other guineas went over to see what was wrong with him. He finally got up and wobbled over to the back of the hen house.
I checked just a while ago and he's back to his dumb ole self again. So I guess he's alright. Darn, as much as I hate the dumb bird, I guess it would be pretty boring around here without him to stir things up.
Come to think of it, he must have a pretty hard head. He did fly through the front window a few years ago. In the middle of the night. It dazed him for a bit but he got up and I got him back outside. SO it probably didn't hurt him at all.

Yep, he's just fine today! Didn't hurt him a bit. He is a tough old bird.
They are all pretty amusing. A few weeks ago several of the farmgirls came out and we had lunch. We sat and watched RFD tv right out the dining room window for a long time. It was funny. Dumb White Guinea was on the other side of the fence and went back and forth for hours trying to get back in the yard. He's not too bright. Just like my granddaughter Chloe just said, even though he flew over there he can't get back in.
Never a dull moment around here.

The girl watching my chickens while I was on vacation hit the 'ol rooster and she said he was down for several minutes, then waddles off to the coop where he stayed 3 days before going back to his mean self. What's so funny is this poor kid can't walk and chew gum, she was more scared than the rooster. She had no idea ahe could actually hit him hard enough to hurt him. He was coming after her at the time.

I think when a rooster comes at you, you can do just about anything. That is funny, though. He probably was embarrased so much he had to hide. I bet the girl was ok with that.

Kris - I think it is the universe trying to tell that silly old bird to shape up or you might just take him out. It is amazing that our aim gets spot on at the best times. I am like you can not hit a barn but one time when my oldest son was 14 and smarting off big time I picked up his frizbe when he was shouting at me "You can't touch me, I run alot faster then you" - now mind you I throw worse then a girl but I managed to throw the frizbe, it went around the corner of my bed room and around the corner of his bedroom and managed to smack him right in the face. Now, I am not into child abuse and do not advise violence but that smack him so hard that is gave him a bruise and that shocked him so much that that was the last time he ever hard that type of an attitude - so see maybe your guy will get the same message.

I guess sometimes we just need to let all our "kids" know who's boss. It does seem to help for awhile. But DWG is still at it. As soon as I turn my back he's running the poor chickens all over. And for no apparent reason, either. He never eats because he's so busy running everyone else away from the feed.
Carol, I'm glad your roo has a better attitude now.
Grace, I guess that showed him, huh? He was probably way more surprised than hurt that you would even try to do that to him. Ha!Ha! Sometimes we just gotta do it.

Your so right Kris,
The silly thing was I did not even know he was in that room - I was just so frusturated and just let that frizbee go - now really I do not throw frizbees in the house that was one of the things I was made about was his junk was just all over the house and I had a group of student arriving in about 20 minutes and he was smarting off NOW!
Well, he is now married and grown but he still gives that story as the example of "Don't mess with my Mom, she means business". Since that event happened I have tried to throw a frizbee and you guess it I can not even come close to hitting a barn.
Hope your silly guy gets some brains if not well, look at it this way, it gives you someone to direct your attention too.. There always has to be one squeaky wheel...

My SIL says I need to give DWG some Prozac. That might calm the old boy down a bit. I am going to see if the man up the road wants them all. He'd have to figure out how to catch them, though. They are all roosting up in the maple tree. I think the only way to get rid of them would be a guinea shoot. Instead of a turkey shoot. But with real live guineas. It would be a lot more peaceful around here.
I am also going to put chicken wire up in one of the stalls today and tonight have a rooster roundup. There are 7 too many. And 3 of the biggest ones are terrorizing one poor little hen all day. I'll keep them in there til they get a bit bigger. Then a friend of mine has a bunch too, and we'll just have a butcher day here. Sounds good to me. My hubby loves chicken and dumplings.
I hope I don't sound too morbid but I just have way too many critters right now. Something's goota give here. I always have times like this where I think if I didn't have this or that things would be so much better. And it usually is. But it seems to take a while to get there sometimes. And really, they all do have a pretty good life here. Very free range. And pretty happy most of the time, too. But it is alot of work when there are so many to take care of and feed. So this is a good solution to a big problem. And pretty much free food, too. Can't beat that!

We raised our own chickens years ago but stoppped. This year we raised some again and Saturday I butchered some. I didn't know if I would remember how after about 20 years but it all came back. Now we'll have some good chicken to eat this winter. (This does sound kinda morbid but such is life!)

I did put the wire up and I could hardly see with the sweat pouring down my face into my eyes. I guess I should have done it earlier this morning. But it's all done now. I just have to wait til tonight and throw those boys in and wait.
Good for you, Laila. It isn't really hard at all. Just really time consuming is all. I think we will use the clothes line this time to hang them to bleed out. But it's so hot here we may need to wait til Oct. at least. I just hate to have to feed them for so long. We could do a few at a time. There are only 7.

Oh, my gosh, Kris and Grace, ya'll have cracked me up! And Laila, ya'll don't sound morbid to me at all. I have the upmost respect for anyone who can butcher animals! I just don't have the stomach for it.

I got 6 of the boys put up. I stopped at the feed store and asked what I could fatten them up with. She called her brother who raises chickens and he said laying pellets. I guess because of the high protein. So I got some and will just put in the pen with them and they can have all they want. But I really don't want to spend too much on them. I cleaned out the fridge and gave them 2 big bowls full of stuff. I also want them as natural as possible and I know layer pellets are not too natural. I guess it won't hurt too much.
I just wish someone would come along and buy the whole bunch of them. But a big ole bowl of chicken and dumplings sure sounds good cooking on the stove all day. Yumm!
