Well in May we got 2 ducks, and 4 chickens. This morning our Rouen decided to fly over the fence, about 5 feet high. But then realized she wasnt with her family and couldnt understand how to get back over the fence. So I need to clip their flight wings, any advice??

I just open up my chickens wing and clip with scissors the outer feathers, just follow right up the wing, and it keeps them from flying. It won't hurt them and they eventually grow back. Hope this helps.

Don't clip the wings!!! Put deer netting over the top of your pen and they'll stay in just fine. I've heard enough poultry judges at the fair over the years chastise folks for clipping wings because there really isn't a reason for it. At least consider the netting?

There isnt really a huge problem or fear of predetors getting in our yard, just the birds getting out. They run free in my yard during the day when I am home, and are put to bed everynight. I have them in a chicken "tractor", and I cant net my whole yard. Thanks ladies, I did clip, sorry, but I had to do what I thought was best for my animals.Staying in their yard is definatley the best.

We have several chickns who hop the fence
I clip their wings and they still manage to get over, then back over to roost w/ their coop-mates
This does help me see if there are repeat offenders or different ones getting out

We are going to go with netting over their yard cause we do have eagles and the such around here that I don't want swooping down in and stealing anything. I did not know to only clip one wing though if one has to! Rae

Amanda I never wish to judge someone regarding the care of their animals but might it just be that the reason we put these types of practices in effect is for our ease and not for the animals. Animals are born with talents that are there to save their lives and to express who they are - we alter them so our life is easier not theirs. If a netting is not feasible then maybe showing the animal how to get back would be the easier way. I know that sounds nuts to most but I have shown many times a duck, goose and hen how to get back after excaping and now it is no longer an issue - while still leaving them the ability to take flight if they need too - win, win. I find this same reasoning with other animals. Most take the fighting teeth of Llamas and Alpacas but I have proven over 13 years of raising them (males all together) that they are not going to kill each but rather they have killed three coyotes and chased a mountain lion away because Mother Nature gave them a way to do so.
Maybe there might be another way - no judgement just information.

I did not wish to offend but Mother Nature gave them the protection of flight.. There must be another way to keep them safe but again it is your choice.
Good luck to you and your ducks

Had a laugh the other day when one of our very randy bantam roosters was corting a hen that had gotten out. She wanted nothing to do with him, so she hopped back into the pen quicklike.
What a good boy! Saved me the effort! |
