It was sooo cool talking to folks about the bees, letting kids hold the parts of (an empty) hive and pieces of honeycomb! And watching adults AND childrens faces light up when we worked the hive inside the screen rroom and brought out a frame of bees in an exhibition hive so they could see the bees up close! It was just a ton of fun! (and I think we hooked a couple more folks into taking the course next winter and beginning beekeeping too!)

That sounds so fascinating! We have a hive in our garden this year, courtesy of our neighbor. Check out my blog for pics. I can't wait until the honey harvest.

Oh believe me - I had a blast too! I am volunteering tomorrow from 1 to 5 also! So many people are concerned about the bees - it was good to see. They are amazing little creatures!
I just picked up "Bees: Nature’s Little Wonders" by Candace Savage to read on the train ride to Seattle at the end of the month. I had to stick it in my suitcase so I wouldn't read it now... LOL!

Sounds like you had a lot of fun. I recently located an area beekeeper and the honey tastes so much better than what I could buy at the store. I think bees are fascinating and it's great that so many people are interested in them. enjoy your book!

Hi ladies!
My boyfriend is a beekeeper, and I helped him last fall extract and bottle the honey. It was so much fun! I would like to learn to make beeswax candles with the leftover wax. Do any of you know how to "clean" the debris from wax before it is poured into candle molds?

Great question! I'm hoping to get some wax from my hive later this year. May have to do a bit of research at the library . . . or maybe someone here knows.

I've looked at quite a few candlemaking books, but none of them tell how to clean the wax, just how to melt it and pour the candles. If you find anything at the library, please keep me in mind!

Hey guys, sorry to be absent for so long --haha, I might have stories of a city beekeeper in the future...anyhow, cleaning beeswax: put beeswax into double boiler. ON med/low heat, melt wax. Strain through cheesecloth. Put into double boiler again, melt and strain again through new, clean cheesecloth. This should strain out any debris in the wax. If you do this twice (some folks say three times!) this should leave you with usable wax. You can pour the liquid wax into block molds or into premade candle molds.
