Hi all,
My son is 11 and would like to volunteer and help animals. Since we are "city-fied" and are unable to live on the farm of our dreams right now, does anyone have any suggestions on how to help him do this? I have had difficulty with some organizations because, for liability reasons, they do not want volunteers as young as him. He is an animal lover and I want to encourage this trait! Thanks farmgirls,

Happy Trails!

Local human society or no kill shelter...is there an extension through the schools? Near a farm...just stop and ask...

Rachael- Try talking to a local vet- especially a large and small animal vet. Sometimes they will let them help out and "shadow" them. I did that for years and it was fabulous. I learned so much and really got an appreciation for all the vets do.

Another idea is to see if there are any farms or ranches in the area that would let him volunteer as well. Maybe put out an add on your Local Freecycle "Wanted: Opportunity to Volunteer around Animals" or something.

One last suggestion- is there a horse rescue or a horse program in the area that helps disabled people ride rehab horses? Places like that are always looking for help!
