so its that time of year again and like clockwork my scalp and some patches of skin have become horribly itchy and dry. My main focus here is my scalp. I was wondering if anyone knows any useful home remedies for this. Until then, scratch scratch scratch!

I have this same problem right now too!!! For your skin I have started a thread called 'body moisturizer' and some of the ladies have some really good ideas. For scalp though, the only thing that I have found that works is doing and apple cider vinegar rinse after I shampoo my hair. I put about 1 Tbs. to 1 cup water. You don't want it too strong or it will dry out your hair but it helps with the itchies. It will leave your hair smelling like vinegar until it dries but I promise it won't smell like that after and plus you'll have wonderful shine to your hair!! Also about once a week (if I can remember) I try to do a hot oil treatment on my hair with jojoba or olive oil. On my scalp I'll add a few drops of tea tree oil and rub on and let it sit for 15-20 min then shampoo and condition as normal.

My skin tends to be dry and itchy. I use really fatty soap and useing creams on my skin that are made with things like shea butter, cocoa butter and other really great oils. No perfumes and fdrink a lot of water and take about a tbsp of flax oil everyday. All this seems to help but it never really goes away completely. I agree with Kristi about the vinegar it really make my scalp and hair pretty happy. Oh and my skin (especially my scalp)loves jojoba oil

Leah,
I was posting on the Psoriasis board. I'm starting to experiment with what to use on my scalp and ears. So far I've stopped using shampoos, which are detergent based and have started using the unscented Dr. Bronner's liquid castile soap. I use a rinse of 1/4 C. vinegar in a quart of water after that. So far it seems to be working very well. The itching has improved some and after a couple of days of HUGE amounts of scale coming off (the psoriasis) the flaking is much less. If this keeps up I may grow my hair out again!
Good luck!

Jana, I've tried getting rid of shampoo also but the only subsitute that I've tried are shampoo bars from www.chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com. They smell heavenly but I have hard water where I am and I'm thinking the real soap doesn't work well with hard water, even with a vinegar rinse to even out the ph. Do you have hard water where you are or is it that it takes some getting used to. I have almost waist length hair and certainly don't want to damage it !!

Might want to see if a tea tree based shampoo will help or hemp oil.

I have the same problem all winter. 2 years ago I even went to the dermatologist thinking I had bugs because of the itching and the resulting rash. Nope, just normal everyday severe dry skin.
I use an olive oil based soap and put cream on before my skin drys. Curel is the only cream that has worked for me.
For my scalp, I have been less successful. What has helped some is VO5, the old fashioned stuff in the tube. It is all natural made with lanolin and if you rub it into your scalp, leave on a little while then shampoo you scalp feels better at least for that day.

i tried the vinegar rinse a a year ago at this time and it made my hair shine like crazy! however didnt help with the itchyness...I am going to try the tea tree oil, i love that stuff! i just never thought about putting it on my scalp..haha. Should apply the oil directly to the scalp or mix it with water?

Life's messy!... Grab an apron!
