I'm thinking of starting a beauty blog. Although I'm not actively working as an Esthetician anymore, I still am in love with the science of skin. I could include my experience as a makeup artist with the Miss Ohio Program, tips of the trade, skincare facts, sun facts and what-not. Is it a waste of breath or is it something people ( I mean, us...) would read? What is it YOU'D like to know?

I'm there. I'd like to know if some of these expensive 'green' products are worth the money, and if the 'make it from items in your fridge' recipes really work. I'd also love to know how to shape my own eyebrows according to my face shape/natural eyebrow arch...see? I'm there.

Dawn, I have one and it just drives me crazy. I shower and wash my face with a cloth and Dove soap. I was it really good especially around my nose and I have a minty cleanser I use next. Then I get out of the shower now out of morbid habit I look in that huge magnifying mirror and around the sides of my nose I see these little white things in my pores. They will not wash away so I grab my really pointed tweezers and pull them out, or take my fingernail and scrape my skin and some will come out. They are not anywhere except around my nose and they can't be seen except in that awful mirror but now that I know they are there I can't help get rid of them. I don't have oily skin or blackhead or pimples. Just those little things. Help!!! They drive me crazy!

lmao! Melody June... get yourself an extractor. Or a bobby pin head and GENTLY scrape down the sides of your nose... haha.. then treat it with some salicylic acid 2%.....hee hee.... I'm going to bed with that visual in my head....hahahaha....lol......
okay, you two alone, talked me into it. Cant had white nose thingy, bad eye-browed farm girls floatin around.... LOL!

I think farm girls especially could use your know how. I have hit the menopause years and my skin and hair have gone very dry. Oh and those age spots..got them too. I started using a sugar scrub I got as a gift years ago and thought it was too oily then. Now I soak it up like a sponge. Finished it up yesterday so decided to make my own. I peeled off the body works $20 sticker from yrs. ago, washed the jar for reuse and made my own this morning with sugar, baby oil and some rose scented essential oil. I can't wait to see how I works. I figure it cost me maybe 50 cents to make a very nice big jar.

Haha.... okay okay. I'm going to start on it tonight. I will post an update on this thread soon.
In the meantime, baby oil is mineral oil. Not particularly a good choice in my opinion. Just doue tot he fact that other than lay of thop of the skin, it's not really beneficial. Try using (next time) an olive, jojoba, almond or seseme oil. Your skin is porous, so what you put on top WILL soak thru...make it something that's good for you inside and out.

Count me in Dawn.....
I'd like to know what you think about the "mineral make-up"? Personally, I started using "Bare Minerals by i.d.....Bare Escentuals" and I absolutely LOVE it. But I would like your opinion.....the opinion from an Esthetician's point of view. I don't wear a lot of make-up and I hardly know that I have the Bare Minerals on. At first I was skeptical about them so only bought the "starter" kit, because I thought they might make my face real dry....but voila, they don't. I use a moisturizer made with the tannin of raspberry seeds, and then a "primer" and just a dot of the minerals.
Whatcha think gal???

I love love love mineral make up. It's pretty easy to use, and a little goes a long way. And it's got a sunscreen barrier built in... zinc. Gotta love that! the only thing I'd say is start out with very little and add more if you need it. The minerals "stick" to your skin and if you start out with a gob of it, the only way you're gonna blend it out is to wash and start over, because minerals will darken within a 15 minute time frame. You'll go out, see a reflection of yourself and think "Where the heck did that brown blob come from??"
I'm not sure about these new liquid minerals. I mean, what's the emulsion holding all these minerals together? Oil? Fat? I'll have to get out my cos dictionary and look that one up. And minerals mimic your natural lipid barrier... which is your oil surface. We all need that oil surface (lipid barrier). It's a defense mechanism. So in my humble opinion, minerals act as soldiers to bolster it. No harm, no foul to me!
I just want to disclaim here. In NO way, shape or form am I a medical expert, or a full-on know-it-all about all things skin, make up or otherwise. I simply just want to share what I've learned, and learn more. Not everything I say will work for everyone. Everyone's skin has a completely different chemical make up... you need to find your own balance. Keep in mind your allergies, sensitivities and past reactions before you try anything. Have fun!

Oh my goodness Dawn,
I had no idea what an extractor was but I HAD a bobby pin. What a miracle!! Can you email me your address please? I got out of the shower and that bobby pin cleaned the side of my nose in a second (I could pick for 1/2 hour before) now I have to look up salicylic acid 2% and get some today.
What a life saver your are and something so simple!! Hope you got some sleep and weren't kept up to late laughing your bum off at me!!! LOL But better to laugh than to cry.

Thanks for the information. I started using Bare Minerals about 9 months ago and love it.
My only caution to others is not to be taken in by the imitations. Bare Minerals is a bit pricey, but well worth the investment. I did try "Sheer Cover" and sent it back the day after receiving it. I also tried a brand that is sold at Sally Beauty Supply...and NONE of them can compare to i.d. Bare Minerals. They are top of the line.....and I love it so much that I have disposed of all the other make-up I had in my drawer. It lasts a super long time, as it only takes a tiny dab to cover.
Thanks again for your input. And...I love the idea of this forum.

Thought I'd save some money and bought the brand at Wal Mart (still expensive) and what a mess it was!! WASTED all that money because I threw them in the trash. I felt like I'd been plowing the field's all day with dirt on my face! Go for the real stuff!

Buyer beware, minerals should feel like silky powder. The silkier, the finer it's been milled. I used Mirabella Pure Minerals (cuz I was an educator/artist for them for a few years). I still sell it. Ours is triple milled. I tried some Neutrogena stuff and it felt like sand. Icky.

Salicylic acid... you can get it at any drug store. My favorite is Clean & Clear Maximum Strength Invisible Blemish Treatment. Love the stuff. Another drug store dynamo? Check the blog!

Well, mineral oil just lies on top of the skin. Whereas an oil with a smaller molecular structure will absorb. It's not that it's BAD, there's just better options.

I'd read it for sure, Dawn. Having just had Violet, my skin is taking on some hormonal changes that I'm not too fond of. Never really had troubling pimples or anything, but there's some dryness and a few little pimples here and there, and I feel like the elasticity is gone. People have always commented on my pretty skin, and I'd like that to continue, thank you :)
I have a pretty simple regiment--I do a natural citrus peel every week and an eye cream 2 times a day--a girl can't leave home without an eye cream!!!!!

Hi Dawn,
The blog looks great and already has a plethora of good, sound information. Thank you for all the time and effort you've put into it.
Here's something I do....and would like your feedback on the subject.
I have always had combination skin, but now that I'm 55 I've noticed that it's a bit on the dry side. Every Saturday or Sunday before starting my house cleaning chores I rub EVOO...extra virgin olive oil on my face, neck and decollette/chest. I also rub some in my hair and then pin it up and cover it with a bandana.
When I shower at the end of the day....my skin is soft, moist and glowing. And my hair is silky smooth and shiney....I'm blonde, and from my experience, blonde hair does not shine and shimmer like darker hair. But believe me when I tell you I have a wonderful shine.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I use i.d. Bare Minerals by Bare Escentuals, and I will take a tiny bit of color and mix it with a small drop of EVOO...and paint it on my lips. My lips stay moist....and the color lsts for a nice long time.
