Hi, All! I've been using the following recipes for over 6 months now and I LOVE them both! So easy to mix up, very effective, and of course, not a harmful chemical in sight! Here goes:
Homemade toothpaste: 1/2 c. Baking soda 1/4 c. hydrogen peroxide (you can add more or less, depending on the consistency you like) 1-3 drops of peppermint essential oil 1-2 drops tea tree oil
If you want a "smoother" mouth-feel from your toothpaste, you can add vegetable glycerin, but I've been using it without and think it's just fine. Now, this may take you a little getting used to, if you're used to storebought, sweetened stuff* (it took me about a week), but this is so cheap and easy - not to mention you can avoid the flouride found in conventional toothpastes! :o) *(If you really need a "sweet" taste, you can add powdered stevia.)
Homemade Deodorant: 1/4 c. cornstarch 1/4 c. baking soda 10 drops tea tree oil Mix thoroughly, place into a sealed container, and apply lightly with a folded cotton cloth. Tea tree (as I'm sure you all know) is anti-bacterial. No bacteria? No stinky!! :o)

Thanks, Sarah. I have been wanting to get a better deodorant and toothpaste and here it is. I will have to get a few of the ingredients to make it. I love peppermint.

Sarah,
Thank you for posting these recipes. I have been making and using my own deodorant for about 3 months and I love it! It is basically the same recipe as yours only you also add 5-6 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil to it, and I used Lavender Essential Oil.
I can't wait to try the toothpaste :)
Thanks again!

Sarah, I made the toothpaste, without any flavoring. Like it very much, really gets your teeth squeeky clean. Thank You so much, Sheri

Ok, I just made them both. I just used the toothpaste. My teeth are so white and feel so clean and my mouth is tingly from the peppermint. But did I miss an ingredient? Because the mix is very thin, not pastey. Will it thicken up as it sits? I did notice the soda settles to the bottom and I had to stir it back up with the toothbrush. But other than that, I love it. I will try the deodorant tonight.

I will answer my own question now. It does thicken up! And expand, too. I had mixed up double the recipe and put it in one of those little freezer cups. We went to get a few truckloads of hay and just got back. When I went in the bathroon there was all this white goopy stuff all around the little container. It had started thickening up and probably would have exploded before too long. I'm glad I caught that.
So make sure there's plenty of room in your container!

Thank you for the tip Kris. Is the toothpaste too thick to put in a pump type bottle. Or has anyone tried any other way of dispensing than a freezer type cup?

Ok, not to be yucky - but my husband goes through deodorant like it was water! And the store bought stuff he likes is getting pricy to boot. For the ladies here who have used the deodorant recipe... how well do you think it would work for the men folk and would you make any changes to the recipe or fragrances?

I hope someone can answer ya'lls questions. Where would you get the toothpaste pump tubes?
I really liked the deodorant and it did work. But I noticed under my arms were a bit sore after a few days. Last night I looked and they were very red. So I think I may be allergic to it? I didn't put anything on last night after I showered or this morning. Boy, that's nasty! I really do need something when I'm outside working on fencing. It's not a good thing. So now I have to figure out what to do.

Kris, I'm so sorry to hear you had a bad reaction. Maybe eliminating the tea tree oil would help??
I've never done toothpaste tubes - I just keep mine in a little tupperware container.
AlyssaMarie, If I were making it for my hubby, I would simply add maybe a "manly" scent - if you felt you wanted to add any scent at all.

Tea Tree can be a bit strong....perhaps reducing it, or leaving it out would work. But...great recipes!

My hubby uses and loves the deodorant recipe as well. Amazingly, he is OK with lavendar oil instead of tea tree. I think the effectiveness of this recipe is dependent upon something anti=bacterial like tea tree or lavendar. I think most essential oils have some anti=bacterial properties.
If it's not illegal, unsafe, or immoral, why not try anything once? Who knows? You may come back for a second helping! |

I am going to go back to this. I know a woman that uses this, was recommended by her dentist and her teeth are beautiful and white. I never put any flavoring in it but I bet that would be better. |
