I was just wondering what a good price on beeswax is? I would like to try candle-making but want to know what is a reasonable price. I was also wondering if anyone knew how many ounces or pounds are needed to make taper candles (say 7-inch). Thanks for your help :)

Sharon- I can get beeswax at bulk prices. I can call and check to see what the current price is. I see beeswax for $2 an ounce at the store and that is horrible. I think I could get it and then sell it to you for closer to $.75 an ounce, but let me double check before I make any promises.
Alee, I have seen different colored beeswax. I had ordered some once from Pine Meadows to make lip balm. It was shaped like pearls that were a soft cream color. Is the Beeswax you can order the honey color? If so I would be very much interested if it's not an inconvenience for you. Thank you!

Hi Sharon!
So Sorry I missed this post for so long! Yes, the beeswax I can get is pretty much as close to the beehive as you can get. You might want to strain it through cheesecloth when you melt it just to make sure it is filtered. The beeswax I get is a deep rich golden yellow color. If you want I will try to take a picture of the block I have right now. I have about a quart worth on hand.
Do any of you know the process of taking raw beeswax (my boyfriend is a beekeeper) and cleaning it so it can be melted and used for making candles? I've looked in a number of candlemaking books and websites, and none of them tell you how to prepare the dirty wax for candlemaking.
Thanks!

Luanne- you simply need to melt it and filter it. I am not sure but you could try paper milk filters or even cheese cloth.
