Hello, Since I had so much time on my hands recouping..I read every magazine tht came in the door. Amd drove my husband crazy with projects that I want to start..I want to ask if anyone knows how to make a Beehive Pizza oven??? It is made of terra-cotta. I read it in Hobby Farm Home July/August issue. I would love to know how to make one. We woould rather make one instead of buying it from Williams-Sonoma..

I don't have any idea how to build one, but it reminded me of the time we ran out of propane for our cookstove and I had just finished putting together a batter for cornbread that had onions and chili powder and bacon in it and it was 30 miles to get more propane. There was no way I was going to let that mix go to waste. I took a bunch of concrete blocks and made an oven in our driveway. I used the grate from the cookstove as a shelf and put the batter in a huge cast iron frying pan and covered it with foil, built a fire in this contraption and took my chances. That was the best cornbread I ever ate in my life. I think having one of those ovens would be wonderful! I think if you "googled" How to build an earthen oven", you'd get lots of ideas or links to plans to build one.

I saw that article too. They didn't give instructions on how to build it? I just glanced at it and didn't read it all. Usually those mags give the directions on how to do it yourself. Was there a place to write too or anything. Why not write or email Hobby Farm Home and see if they can help you fund instructions.

I've been drooling over the book "The Bread Builders"hearth loaves and masonry ovens by Daniel Wing and Alan Scott. The difference between a bread oven and a pizza oven is insulation of the oven, thicker walls etc.You can make pizza in a bread oven (and lot's of other food as well) but you can't very well make bread in a pizza oven(from what I understand). It's intended to cook hot and quick not holding temp. for very long.It seems to make sense to build the insulated one.Anyway plans and ideas in that book.
Good luck I hope you can make one, Katie

I'm also wanting one of those ovens. Surley someone on here has some experience with them. I think the next time I go to a good bookstore I'll look for some books on it. If I get mine done I'll make sure to post on it.

I also want to build one, soon. Here is the link to Mother Earth's article on how to build one. I'm with Katie...if you're going to build one, might as well build the one that does it all!

Hope that helps and good luck!

We are actually in the process of building a wood oven in our back yard. As we are currently selling sourdough stone baked bread as a preliminary to a brick oven. However, as a temp oven for us to practice and get used to the fire, we are building a mud oven. We are so excited as our bread went over so well at the Farmers Market. I am currently baking a huge stone dome which gives the same effect as a wood fired oven. We too read the Bread Builders book, and my husband has plans for a mud oven. Years ago we had a mud oven that was fantastic, but it had a small medal barrel inside it. This oven will be solid mud, which will harden and make the dome. Recently my husband hauled in some red clay to get us started. I was excited until I realized it had to be sifted, as it is full of rocks. But hey, I can sift.
I am so ready for this oven. At this time I can only bake one loaf at a time. And it takes alot of time. Hope you get yours soon!
