I received a phone call last night from a dear friend that lives in PA. She told me her hubby of 50+ years passed away a couple of weeks ago. My daughter and her 2 kids were aquainted also. We had been to visit them several time. This friend of mine was a quilting pin pal. We are racking our brain to figure out what we can do for her or send her to let her know how much we care. They had downsized from their farmhouse to an appt at their son's house. Quilting or gardening stuff is not an option. She is so far away that we cannot thing of a thing. HELP |

I bet if you made a personal commitment to call or write or email her on a regular basis, that would help her this first year. Her life and routine is probably so changed now, that something regular that she can count on would be a comfort to her. I guess making her a quilt would be redundant?

Belle, my husband died in Aug 07, he just turned 53. At first she probally does not know what she wants or needs, then she will possibly push people away, and then become clingy, or visa/versa. One thing I needed most was for people to just listen, I babbled sometimes, I told stories, or memories, I cried and sometimes even laughed, i wa sure I was a pain in the you know what alot, but it did get a little easier with each passing week. Everyone grieves differantly, be patieant, and try not to lose your temper with her, cause soetimes you will want to, believe you me! Sometimes, you will need to be there for her, even when she doesn't want you there, and I'm saying this as you calling, e-mailing and visiting when possible.

Yes, just BE there for her. That is all she needs right now whether she knows and realizes it or not. I recognize many things Teresa said. Eventhough it was not my husband who passed away but my mom and 4 months later my brother. At first you think I don't need anyone, I don't want to talk. Then you become clingy. I still am a little clingy. But just be a friend :) and if she wants to talk, listen. You don't have to answer but just listen.
Hugs from Marian/Dutchy, a farmgirl from the Netherlands :)

Besides what the girls have already said how about a memory pillow? If you have any photographs of her and her husband together copy one and have it transferred to fabric and make a pillow for her bed. Every night when she goes to bed it will comfort her. These are so easy to do. Just iron on transfers and you can trim out with lace around the picture once you've ironed it onto the fabric or if you don't have a printer you can perhaps take the photo to a copy store and have a transfer made for you. I did this for a gift for my brother when he married 5 yrs. ago and it sits on an old chest in their living room for all to see.
