This entire story made me mad. I even felt compelled to leave a comment.

I didn't feel anything? Not even surprise. A lot of my friends who have younger kids, the kids are bigger and show more proudly. I do think that that Americans are heavier now than when we were growing up. I know I'm a lot bigger. I also agree that it is a big health issue. A few insurance companies (not mine)will also pay a percent of a gym membership. It's a sad truth that we are getting bigger. I know alot of it is genetics, but not all of it.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

I have to agree with Diane. Not surprised in the least. I live further south than both of you, but I also travel quite a bit with my job. It just makes me sad, especially for the children. They are living out the example set by their parents. It motivates me to set a better example for my nieces and the children of my friends. Eat natural and organic, enjoy natural foods instead of processed foods, and everything in moderation.

The chief source of failure and unhapiness is trading what you want the most for what you want at the moment.

Kate - what about it made you mad? I too am not suprised by the story - in fact I have heard many similar reports before. I think our country (compared to others I've visited) has a very nochalant, almost lazy attitude about food and the way we eat. Part of the problem is that we are so far apart from each other. Unless you live in a city most of us have to drive everywhere. Everyone is interested in doing major once a month shopping at costco and SAMs which indicates the purchase of a majority of convinence type food loaded with HFCS and who knows what else. I teach and live in Arkansas and I am not a bit surprised that our kids are the "secoond fattest" in the nation. I'd really be curious as to your thought Kate.

Alot of todays generation of parents are raising "couch potato kids", TV, video games and computers are the "NOW" babysitters. When I heard that the #1 fingerfood for toddlers is "McDonalds frenchfrys", I know then that parents are creating a generation of over weight kids, which will make over weight adults.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. I only get angry when I hear what my grandsons are being fed because my kids are not listening to me! One of my grandsons is on meds for ADHD and I keep telling them if they would just stop feeding him all the sugar and crap, he wouldn't be so out of control! They think I'm full of hooey and still believe the FDA wouldn't approve things if they were harmful! I can't seem to get through to them and it's so sad to watch. Deep down, I think they're just too lazy to prepare real food and prefer to fool themselves so they can continue to just pull a box from the freezer, open it, throw it in the microwave and serve. Or drive to some fast food joint, have someone else pull the box from the freezer, micro it and serve. My one son actually thought he was doing good by feeding his son instant oatmeal. Well, it's oatmeal, he tells me! Sorry to say, son, it's really a packet of sugar, preservatives and thickeners with a few oats thrown in. People are not wanting to see the truth because it would mean changing their lifestyle which, to them, seems like too much work.
