I'm roasting a big, organic chicken! The Hutterites in our area raise the tastiest chicken we have ever tasted. I was able to buy one yesterday. It's a cool day, so our house won't get overheated by having the oven on all afternoon.
We will be enjoying fresh green beans and new potatoes for side dishes and maybe cobbler for dessert. DS's birthday is on Thursday, so I will be making a German Chocolate cake...his favorite.

I have already butchered several of my meat chickens, and since chicken is one of our favorites, ( along with beef, pork, lamb, rabbit, fish etc) I will also be roasting one, with rosemay/thyme , and baby greenbeans lightly steamed and still crunchy tossed with dried cranberries, biskits with honeybutter. OK, now I'm hungry, LOL.

LOL! I was just reminded of Grandpa Jones in Hee Haw wiping the fake window down.
"Hey Grandpa! What's for Dinner?"
Fried chicken with red eye gravy, green beans with bacon and ham, mustard greens and peach cobbler!
YUM YUM!

Jonni,
How about chicken garlic pizza? Use ranch dressing for the sauce, chicken and sliced tomatos with mozzerrella. Bake it about 10 minutes YuM! YUM!

Joyce, educate me, please, about "Hutterites"? Similar to the Amish?

Sounds like about everyone is eating greenbeans. We had greenbeans too, left over from my last canner. I finished boiling them, cooked up some new potatoes. In another pan, I fried some bacon pieces and some green onions, then put the whole thing together. (Drained the potatoes but not the greenbeans.) I needed to use up the bacon, (out of the freezer max amount of time) so I used a recipe I had just read in the Taste of Home Healthy Cooking magazine. I made a rub with brown sugar, ground mustard, cinnamon, Nutmeg (I added a little curry). Rubbed this on the bacon and layed it on a rack over a cookie sheet and baked it. Took about 30 min at 350. It was sooooo good. Two slices is supposed to be a serving. I ate 6, OK maybe 8. |

Hi Cherry,
From what I understand, Hutterites are similar in some ways to the Amish and Mennonites. Originally, they came from Europe as well, to avoid religious persecution. It's a patriarchal society, the men make the decisions for the group. Hutterites live on "colonies", always in a rural setting, sort of like a large farm. They are quite self sufficient and build their own homes and outbuildings. There is about 300 colonies in Canada and about half that in the U.S.(I think, don't quote me on this!).
The dress is quite distinctive. The men dress in jackets, pants and brimmed hats, always black. The women are more colorful, but modest. They wear dresses that look to me like they were all made from the same pattern and scarves covering their heads.
There is a number of colonies in our area. The Hutterites around here often attend Farmer's Markets and some sell their produce to local grocery stores. I know of a couple of Colonies that sell their food directly to the consumer. My parents used to stop at one particular Colony quite frequently, when I was a child.
I like to learn new things too, hope this was helpful, Joyce |

I work tonight at the BBQ place and my boys are being treated to a few days in the city with my cousin. They leave tonight about 6. So...that means I'll probably bring some BBQ home for hubby and me.

It's 94°F here. Went to my son's house and he grilled hot dogs and we had cole slaw on the side. His BD today and we had brownies for dessert. It's way too hot.

That is one thing about the south that I miss. Good old slow smoking bbq!! I am so hungry now..lol! We had some awesome chili tonight! :D I am going to have to keep some of these in mind for dinner tomorrow night. The chicken garlic pizza sounds really good. I have made it before, but I used ranch dressing in stead of sauce, then the mozzerella cheese, and then pile on crispy grilled chicken pineapple, onions, and crispy bacon...yummies!! Okay, now my tummy is making some serious protests...lol..can you hear it?? Its saying FEED ME!! like on that movie about the venus fly trap plant with Rick Moranis...it always said "FEED ME SEYMOUR!" LOL
hugs
